mk2 turns off instead of going into standby

mk2 turns off instead of going into standby - 03/05/2003 15:17

I just completed installing my empeg into my 2001 Audi A6 2.7T with Bose Premium sound. It was a bitch to get the parts, but I did it and will be posting the step-by-step along with pics soon. My only glitch is that when i turn the car off, the unit goes off immediately, instead of staying in standby. i'm sure there's some easy wire trick, so hopefully someone can help me out! thanks in advance...

Audi and VW are often on the same page...and VWs have the constant 12V and igntion 12V reversed in the harness. (Reversed with respect to the ISO definitions that everyone else uses).
This would certainly give you the the effect that you are seeing. I'm sure that a quick check of an audi forum woulf confirm whether this is the cause.

By '12v constant' do you mean the yellow '12v memory' wire?

Yep.

First of all, have you measured the voltage present on the two wires in question?

I'm talking about the wires from the Volkswagen, not the wires on the player. I mean, if the player were completely disconnected, what are the voltages on the pins of the VW connector. One of them should be 12v all the time, one of them should be 12v only when the ignition is on. If so, are those pins connected to the appropriate wires on the player?

Did you guess at the wire connections and hand-splice, or did you get a proper installation kit with a wiring harness adapter?

Note that even though the empeg sled plugs might be the same physical shape as the VW connector, the wires might be completely switched around. Read the section "Reversed ISO wires" here.

Next, read this.

I used a custom wiring harness made by Autoleads in the UK. Unfortunately, they apparently messed up the 12v constant and 12v ignition. also, i had to run the remote amp power manually.

i checked the voltage on both, all the way from the wiring harness to the sled, and both are correct (after switching them). the unit still goes off completely when the ignition goes off. i don't hear any 'thump' though.

i am running 2.0 final with hijack 334.

btw, this is an audi (obviously they are similar, if not the same - just clarifying).

any other ideas?

If it's a Mk2 (and not a Mk2a) could it not be a broken fuse on the constant power wire?
IIRC, the Mk2 would operate on switched power alone, but not stay in standby if the constant power was broken. Mk2a's will refuse to operate at all in this situation.

how exactly do i tell if it's an mk2 or 2a? i bought it from the 'fire sale' so i assumed it was a 2a...

An MK2 says "Empeg" on top, and MK2a says "Rio" on top.

The biggest difference between the two is that de MK2a has 16mb of RAM and the MK2 only has 12Mb.

ok then it's an mk2a

Did you check the fuse that mtempsch mentioned above, that can certainly cause (IIRC) what you are experiencing?

yes - i did check the fuse - in fact, i checked for +12v all the way to the sled...

The power-off delay is adjustable (Emplode?).. maybe it's set to zero for some reason (normally it's set to a few seconds or minutes after standby).

Cheers

I don't think zero is an allowed option, never tried.

But very short, like 1 second, might make it seem like it wasn't going into standby. Good point. I'll add that to the FAQ.

I believe that is in the FAQ. mine is definitely set higher - 30 minutes if i remember correctly.

In reply to:

[standby timeout] is definitely set higher - 30 minutes if i remember correctly.

Are you running the latest player software? Earlier versions had a limit on the allowed timeout values, and would not spend any time in standby if it were exceeded.

While you're troubleshooting, set it to something like 20 seconds. Remember that the value is in milliseconds if you're editing config.ini directly.
