Installing in a Ford Focus

Regular readers of the Off Topic forum will know that I picked up my new (used) Ford Focus yesterday.

Now I have to get the empeg fitted. I'll probably get Cambridge Car Audio to do the actual install, but I wanted to check some details.

Wiring Loom Adapter

The Focus comes with a control stalk for the factory stereo. I've got one of Patrick's tuner kits. Presumably I just need to get a Ford -> Sony adapter, and then plug that into the tuner kit?

Is this RM-X4S compatible one the right thing to get?

Speakers

For now, I'll probably stick with the original speakers, but I'll probably want to install a sub at some point.

Amplifier

I've got a cheapish 2-channel Sony amp. I need to check that it still works, but I'll probably use that.

Anything else I need to consider?

Luckily my clio already had ISO connectors so I just got the adaptor from AutoLeads. I simply found an adaptor for Sony headunits which did the trick.

Roger, I have this Facia Adapter that has a little pocket under the slot for the remote. Assuming the US and UK spec. opening is the same, I'd give it to you if you're interested. I had a 2000 Focus from 1999 to 2001 and this held my Mk2.

I believe the steering wheel control adapter is the proper one (RM-X4S) - I'm looking to get a similar one for my Peugeot (206 RC) that I'll receive in a couple of weeks...

The wiring loom looks fine, but you may need to switch the switched/permanent 12V feeds around - they vary from loom to loom.

The fascia panel will fit, but they don't give very good support as they are really just space fillers. You can get similar ones with a filler piece top and bottom with a metal frame which I have found support radios better, especially if you don't have a way to support the back of the empeg (similar to the larger support at the back of the link Brad gave). Some of the fascia adaptor kits come with a bolt on plastic piece for the back of the radio/dock which will slide on the mounting rail at the bottom of the radio aperture in the Focus. The US and UK Focus are identical in this area, by the way.

I don't know how the remote connection to the empeg is done, so I can't comment on the adaptor, but that one is also an adaptor for the power and speaker connectors so you wouldn't need the first one... The Focus remote is just a resistive ladder though - I can dig out the values if that helps?

Yeah, I'd be interested. According to Half_Geek, the UK and US model Focus are no different in this area. Does it provide plenty of support for the empeg?

Okay!

The 17-way connector will probably have the following connections. Colours are from my Focus so may not be guaranteed! (pinout attached)

Pin 6 : AVC (Auto Volume Control) a speed signal for volume adjustment - White-with-green-stripe wire
Pins 11 and 12 : remote connections - White-with-black-stripe and brown-with-yellow-stripe wires - these are the 2 you want.

Pins 15 and 17 on mine are also connected. Pin 15 is an output signal from some radios used to provide an enable line to other modules. That wire on my Focus actually lights the reverse light if you power it - how handy! Pin 17 is an airbag sense I believe but I do not know the logic.

For pins 11 and 12 the resistance values are :

Volume down : 53.0 to 55.2 ohm
Volume up : 145.2 - 149.2 ohm
Seek up : 297.6 - 304.8 ohm
Seek down : 556.0 - 568.4 ohm
Mode (end button) : 1026.3 - 1048.1 ohm
Open circuit : 5006.1 - 5107.3 ohm

For completeness sake, and it may save you a few minutes wiring testing, here are the other 2 connectors.
