Custom face plates

Custom face plates - 23/08/2006 02:02

Does anyone have experience making a custom face plate / mounting. I am trying to install the empeg with a 2nd head unit in a 2002 civic.

The opening it plenty big enough for two din sized units but no one makes a face plate that will work with the empeg. Metra makes a double din one but it is set up for rear mount where the head unit is mounted in the dash and the face plate slips over the from with no trim ring.

I tried to modify one of them by cutting the hole in the lower spot big enough for the empeg sled to fit through but the problem was the dash is curved to about 1/2 an inch of the bottom of the epmeg sled shows.

I need to make something custom but don't know what would be good to make if from.

I need someting this shape only deeper so I can push the head units back into it and avoid the curve.

Have you thought about doing Doug Morrison's Trick?

That is a neat idea but I think the curve would still mess it up. I can cut the hole big enough for the sled to fit through but the top of the face of the empeg is flush with the dash and the bottom sticks out 1/2 an inch.

I got a piece of MDF today and am going to try and carve something out of that.

Would it be different if you moved the empeg to the top slot instead of the bottom slot?

No then the top wouldn't be flush instead of the bottom.
