Chrysler PT Cruiser

Anyone out there with hands-on experience with the empeg/PT cruiser combination ?

actually, my wife has a cruiser and wants an empeg. another one of the women converted from cynicism towards the empeg. since the cruiser is not double din, you will need a place to mount an amp since you can't use another head unit. there should be enough room under the driver's seat. i would assume that you don't want to mount it in the back where it would get junk set on top of it, etc. regarding the actual installation, since it is an irregular sized factory radio, you will need some sort of adapter kit. these should not be hard to find (crutchfield probably) as people have been replacing irregular sized chrysler radios for a long time. regarding depth, i thin there should be plenty of room in the back of the dash for the empeg to go back far enough. let us know what you find out.

No problem but don't hold your breath though, I just found out that it's probably comming in June/Juli. Can you f**king believe that ? Geez, almost as long as the first series of empegs...

my wife (who was then just my fiancee)ordered hers last february, and finally picked it up mid july. that was actually a couple months ahead of schedule according to what dealers had told us when we ordered it. it really is a great car. i dont care for driving it that much as i really prefer something small and low (like my miata). not that it is a flaw, it just drives like a larger car because it is a larger car. at least most of the attention has died down. when we first got it, people would corner you in gas stations, stop lights, etc. i had to stop for 10 minutes in a staples parking lot and talk with an older couple about it. the attention was nice at first, but it got old fast. much nicer now that they are a bit more commonplace. nevertheless though, it is a cool looking automobile. now if they would just put a small block in it...

One of the things that I've noticed about the PT is that they designed the body lines to make it look "lowered" in the front. But it's not, the body lines just make it look that way.

What it really needs is a big block Chevy or Mopar engine in it. Then it might be worth having.

Does anyone else find it funny that the 1930's delivery van design is this popular?

Honestly, I was looking at the PT last spring when my parents said they'd get me a car (I know, I'm spoiled like hell). But I found it to be far too small for my needs. That's just my opinion though.

On a side note, the 2 most sought-after vehicles this past spring/summer were the PT Cruiser and the Honda Odyssey. Both had waiting lists a mile and 3 months long, with dealers charging up to $3000 over MSRP for cars in stock.

What is old is new again. I think the old deeply curved looks of the late 50's will be coming back more and more. Every time I see a PT it grabs my eye. I almost want one, but I agree, it's too small. I hope the turbo they put in is beefy enough to start getting into the street rocket market and knock off the Civic (a tall order). Then we'll see some really wild stuff. I first sat in a PT in the summer of '99 at Chysler HQ in Dearborne. I said then it screamed out for a woody kit. I haven't seen one yet, but NH is pretty far from the big customization markets (LA, Miami etc). Chrysler needs all the help they can get right now, their profits are in the toilet at the moment as the Grand Cherokee market is being eaten by BMW, Mercedes, Lexus etc...

Parents getting you cars huh? Man, my 1st two cars were total sh*tboxes (although the '70 Valiant had some class). I can't snipe though, my parents got me a Sentra my senior year in college when the Valiant burned a valve. Be happy though, it lets you put your money where it's really needed - an EMPEG!

i definitely agree. no match for the nova. wont be happening though. ever look under the hood? they must have have a heck of a time squeezing a 4 in there. no way an 8 would fit. but man it would be cool to stuff a 426 hemi in there...

actually you are right. my mom got an odessey last year. waited for that for about 6 months. like i said too, we waited for my wife's cruiser for around 5 months.

regarding room, it seems like alot to us. i drive a miata. while your sax won't fit:), i love it. especially now with an empeg in it. my wife was driving an 86 trans am. not technically a 2 seater, but it might as well have been. after these two cars, a cruiser seems pretty big. although it is not a beast like suvs, there is only us and the dog. no kids yet. we really don't need any more room, so for us the cruiser works well.

we both really like the old delivery van styling, and apparently so do most others. i have always thought that car designs were much better half a century ago than they are today. much more visually appealing. i think alot of cars today are just really blah. of course then there is the pontiac aztec. that is just plain hideous.

Oh, wow are you right. That has to be the ugliest car I've seen in a long time. On edmunds.com they list one of the pros as "Butt-ugly styling". That about says it.

Although the old adage "Nothing's uglier than a Vega" still holds true, those Aztecs sure to come a close second for all-time ugliness.

The best comment about the Aztecs was in the letters section of one of the car magazines this month (don't remember whether it was in C/D or R/T but it was one of those). It went something like "To the driver of the Aztec parked at the Crossroads mall last week: I accidentally vomited on the front bumper after seeing it. I couldn't help it, and I had nothing to clean it up with. I'm sorry. I really am."

i was talking about the pt cruiser, not the prowler. personally, i think the prowler would have been much better with an 8, but i thought i heard it was going out of production so that will not be happening.

back to the cruiser, even if they could fit a 6 in there, it would be much faster, but like i said, the 4 barely fits. unless they do some major modifications to the car, i don't think we will see anything but a 4 for some time.

I know, and it's really starting to tick me off. Here I was so proud of my Gloriously Ugly M coupe, and I get out-uglied by a Pontiac?!?!?

Of course, Pontiac does have a fine tradition of ugly cars, just look at the Firebird (normally the prettier sibling, IMHO) in '69, '79-81, and anything since about '97 or '98.

To get back to the subject line, I really hope that Chrysler's history of putting concept cars into production continues under the Daimler regime. I really want a Jeepster.

I don't think the Prowler is going out of production. It's just that the Plymouth name is being retired. So now it will be the Chrysler Prowler, destroying the fine alliteration of Plymouth Prowler.

Hmm, I thought the PT Cruiser was one of the worst looking cars I have seen lately, while the new Firebirds haven't been that bad. And the Aztek is interesting, and has a look I like quite a bit. Guess it just has to be the look of "Hey, I didn't go back 50 years to copy the look, I made something new".
Besides, the PT Cruiser only got the looks from the past. I'm sure it would be crushed badly compaired to the old massive 50 year old cars :-)

Guess it all has to do with the generation gap between us though. At least we all recognise the best car stereo on the market :-)

I just picked up my Cruiser on Monday and I ordered an empeg today. I will be doing the install myself and will document it and take a bunch of photos. I will probably be a couple weeks before I get everything.
