Volvo V70 - 06/09/2001 08:34

Hi,

I'm about to install a better sound system in my '97 model Volvo V70 - especially i'm interesed in installing a stealth subwoofer. The V70 has a compartment at the back of the car used for storing the sparetire. I'm been thinking of putting a sub in there - Now im curious about whether or not some of you guys either have or know about simular setups which might guide me in the rigth direction ??

Regards,
Kaare

There's an excellent Pioneer "In the tyre" active subwoofer which I am about to buy - can't remember the number offhand - drops straight into the wheel dish of your spare, and fits either space saver or full tyre types. You can either leave it loose, or clamp it to the rim. It transmits nicely through the bodywork and sounds excellent; it has it's own amp and speaker built in and is very attractively priced; excellent wear and tear and shock treatment resistance. I have heard this unit wired to a 4ch/120 W channel setup, and it is excellent. With some creative connector work it is rapidly removable.

Recommended. If you want the model number, mail me here or off list.

That is how I have the subwoofer installed in my Taurus station wagon. The spare tire is mounted vertically in the left rear corner of the cargo compartment, covered by a hard plastic shell. By turning the spare wheel around backwards there was just barely room enough to place a 10" subwoofer inside the dish of the wheel. (about 1/4" clearance all around) The subwoofer is mounted to the plastic shell covering the tire and of course has wires long enough to set the shell aside to gain access to the spare wheel, and also connectors to disconnect it entirely. The shell required reinforcement with sheet aluminum and fiberglas to carry the weight and vibration of the subwoofer.

Sound quality is superb, even though the speaker is running in a free-air environment and wasn't really meant to do so.

Best of all, the installation is totally stealth. Nobody looking at my car would think there was any kind of stereo installed at all.

I just scanned Pioneer website (the european) and didn't see any references to subwoofers which fits inside a sparetire. If you have the productnumber/name available i'd be grateful. but the product sounds exactly like what i want. If possibil i'd ilke to keep my spare wheel handy, and at the same time avoid storing it in the 'normal' trunk compartment. I guess a Taurus is waaaaay bigger than my volvo ;)

I actually have seen a pre-fab subwoofer box for 10 and 15 inch subwoofers which fit into the spare tire well on most coupe type vehicles. If you are still looking, let me know and I will try to find the contact information for the installer I last used whom I know has these units. They are in Boston, MA, USA. I can't seem to find their info on the web and need to get my reciept from them for the phone number.

Here is the info I have. Give them a call and tell them what you are looking for. They have one of these pre-fab units in their showroom so they should know what you are talking about. They also do some slick custom installs for people in the New England area.
