'96 Ford Explorer 2 door sport w/o H.E. Audio - 23/02/2002 20:43

Ok, I have the above listed vehicle.
Currently I have a sony head unit, with a 10 disc changer and 6 disc mini-disc changer. The M.D. is under the driver seat, and the changer is attached to the passenger rear seat.
For any of you that know this car, you know the stereo is din and a half, unless you modify the plastic molding. (Note: I want to be able to resell the car, so unless I can find a replacement piece, that won't happen.)
Now, what would be the best way and place to install the empeg and keep the sony equipment?

I almost forgot.
I also have a switch box for the head unit to control both changers.
What I would like to do is have both head units in the dash, if that isn't possible then fine.
Now, realizing that I am not using the factory amp, just the sony head unit which puts out 30w a channel x 4.
Not bad.
Would it be possible to control the two changers with the empeg?
If so, what would I need?
I need the best solution for this.
Oh, did I mention I want to put a powered subwoofer from crutchfield in the back where the cargo net box is?
They have one that fits perfectly..
Please help.
Thanks

You <can> fit both units in the dash, but it's not fun... I did on my 2k explorer (should be same dash as '96). I used a Scosche double din mounting kit, but to get the empeg to fit, I had to trim some plastic on the dash (not a real problem 'cause the factory radio hides where you have to trim it). The real painful part is that the top of the empeg fascia had to be trimmed as well (about 1/8" - 3/16" IIRC), especially considering that original fascia's are next to impossible to find. Anyway, it can be done... attached is a picture of my install (actually it's in a 2002 now).

Edit: Forgot about the 100k attachment limit...
Try this

so, did you connect the empeg to the aux in on the head unit?
and yes the facia is almost identical.
now, are you talking about the empeg facia being hard to find or the explorer's?

Yes - it's connected to the aux in on the head unit (a Premier DEX-P1R). I use the Premier remote for both, with the help of Mark Lord's Hijack kernal. The facia I was talking about was the Empeg fascia - the mold used to make them is pretty much worn out and there is no remaining stock that I am aware of. I managed to get a spare fascia before they all evaporated... I'm sure the Explorer panel is not that hard to replace (your local junkyard probably has a bunch of them), although you shouldn't have to if you trim it carefully.

ok cool beans..
Just trying to make sure we are on the same page.
Realistically, I don't know why I am worrying about a 6 year old head unit, cd changer and md changer..
Just for the fact that if I go out with friends, I have a lot of room, and we don't necesarrily like each others music so, a cd changer is still somewhat useful...
My best bet would be to just rip out the sony equipment, get a nice high-end amp and subwoofer and go from there.
It would probably be useful and more versatile in the future, then spending good money after bad, and going from one to the other.
Besides, what kind of sound quality can I expect out of the aux in on a 30x4 sony head unit?

I can't speak for the Sony, but the SQ on the Premier's line in is very good. You could also do it another way - get the amp and sub, and let the empeg drive the amp directly, and connect the Sony to the empeg's line in.

Just a thought...
