Add vi editor

Add vi editor - 19/07/2002 19:29

I'd like to see the vi editor available. I don't know that this is tthe most proctical choice, but it would be cool to edit some files (not necessarily the player config files) while logged in. I don't quite feel confident enough to do it myself, but if anybody has done it already abd would like to share the binary, that would be great.

If vi isn't a religious choice , ae is another small editor. Quite emacs like in the basic keybindings... Stuff needed can be found through this post

I reject your ae and your emacs reference as vi is the one true god.

I do believe this is the fastest we've ever gotten to a religious war... vi is obviously a spawn of satan - vivivi

On a more serious side; anyone got vi working on the empeg? I don't recall seeing it...

I haven't tried on the Empeg but my Zaurus has vi on it, so I assume it's not too much of a leap to compile it for the Empeg...

Greetings!

I got the vi working from the debian distribution. While not perfect, it seems to work okay for the basic stuff.

cool, is it as simple as throwing the binary into the path?

Greetings!

If I remember correctly, yes. I will see if I can dig up the binary. Right now, I am tampering a bit, so I do not have my unit easily accessible.

As an alternative to editing files on the player, Emacs will quite happily use FTP to edit the files from another machine. You might want to use a terminal session to remount the drives read-write; I guess you can do that from Emacs, but I haven't investigated in detail.

Religious disclaimer: If you're one of the pitiful fools who don't use Emacs, just pretend I didn't write this.

Greetings!

Here is the vi editor from the debian distribution. Just make it executable, and drop it somewhere in your path. I have a bunch of tools I keep zipped up, and reinstall in my /bin every reload.

Additional: I just checked. The particular vi I use, and attached, is the "elvis" of the debian distribution.

15 years, 9 months, 25 days, 13 hours, 30 minutes later...I returned to grab this file again laugh

Hope you're well, Paul!
