Now and Next...

Now and Next... - 27/02/2001 11:39

I did a brief search to see if this has been wished for already, came up with nada. But if it has, consider this another vote for it...

Now and Next mode - Currently, the system displays the playing song on the top of the list, and the next 3 songs below it.

I think it would be cool if the player displayed the previous song, then the current one (in the big text), followed by the two next songs. I think it'll give a better sense of where you are in your album/playlist.

I would use that mode more if it did that, I think.

I think it did, once upon the time... . But I agree, I would prefer this slightly over the current arangement, too.

Re: Now and Next... - 27/02/2001 11:54

This exact discussion has already happened before.

My personal vote is to have the screen either:

a) Stay the way it is, because I like seeing as many UPCOMING songs as possible, I don't care about what the last song was (I already heard it).

b) If we're going to waste a line, then waste it on displaying the current track's artist/album/year data.

But that's just my opinion.

I have to agree with Tony I'm afraid. I have little interest in seeing into the past. It is the future that I am concerned with.

Actually, Why waste the limited space on the VFD with the current track at all. If you want that info you can switch the info to the full track info. Then you could have even more information on what is coming up.

If you want [the current track] info you can switch the info to the full track info.

The problem is... when you have 2,000 or 3,000 songs on the empeg playing in random sequence, much of the time you aren't going to remember off the top of your head just what song it is that you are hearing, so it's nice to do a quick glance at the screen to see what's playing.

On a similar topic... I would really like to have the track and elapsed time information in the Now and Next screen display on the top line instead of the bottom line, because I have one of the small percentage of poor mounting locations that causes the upper fascia to effectively block half of the top line of my display.

I would like to vote for the "previous" track to be displayed. I have wished for that a few times. Very similar to the the expanded playlist view in Winamp.

I have been wanting that for a long time. That way, you can still see more upcoming tracks. Perfect comprimise.

Re: Now and Next... - 07/03/2001 07:50

I'd also like to see the previous track, but not very much. What I mean is I don't want it to take up much display real-estate. Can we have different sized-fonts in the Now and next, like we do now? How many font sizes are available? Looking at the player now, I think I see 3 different fonts. Is there a set of font sizes you all feel comfortable with? I think I'd prefer:

Last Track (very small)
Current Artist: Current Track (scrolling, large font)
Next Track (small)
Next+1 (small)

or something like that. Ideas?

That's the exact layout i'd like to see. So count my vote on that one.

There is no font smaller than the small font currently used on Now+Next (count the pixels!). There's only room for three lines of small font and one line of "medium" font (the code calls it that, but the "large" font is nowhere actually used, so "medium" is the largest size you get).

Bingo! Dearing has got what I was thinking...

(And as always, the track time and [x/y] tracks display would remain too]

But the more I use the now&next mode, the more I appreciate it for what it is.

I get what you're saying, I guess 4-5 pixels is as small as it gets. At the same time, I don't want the last track taking my attention from what's currently playing when I glance at the screen. What about putting the last track at the top of the screen in a darker shade? That way, it'd be:

Last Track (small, dim)
Current Artist:Track (Medium, bright)
Next (small, bright)
Next+1 (small, bright)

How do you think that'd look?

Dearing, I love that idea.

Re: Now and Next... - 08/03/2001 15:32

Um, "dimness" is used to make the letters as small as they are. If you notice, lowercase "e" characters will only be readable if you use a dim dot for the middle. And since the two middle shades are almost indistinguishable, I'm not sure a dimmer text would be do-able. The Empeg guys can probably speak with more authority, but I think WYSIWYG with the fonts.

Weren't some other shades discovered recently by the empeg boys that were usable?
