Steering wheel remote

Steering wheel remote - 17/10/1999 03:49

I have a Kenwood radio/casette player with both empeg-like remote and steering wheel remotes (there are two, five buttons each). I found those on the wheel much more usefull, although, due to the radio position in my Twingo, they don't always 'see' the radio very well.

How about using good wheel remotes with empeg? (That could be an extra cost option - I would definitively go for it.)

The empeg works with the kenwood steering-wheel (IR) remote just fine - not sure on the part code, Mike has it on his desk. It works just fine :)

I've got a sony stalk control that I've got to get round to interfacing with the empeg - I doubt we'll actually make the adaptors to plug it into the empeg's docking serial connector, but I plan to give out the circuit diagram and code for the interface (about $15 of components).

Most of the buttons generate the same codes as on the credit card remote. IIRC there are two extra buttons SRC and ATT. Currently SRC cycles through mp3, tuner and aux and ATT is equivalent to the pause/play button on the remote.

Mike, could you post the part number for this? It sounds rather interesting, so long as it's not too pricey.

KCA-RC700

I'm not sure where we got it since it just appeared on my desk when I came back from holiday.

It has comparatively few functions compared to the credit card remote:

volume up/down.
track skip back/forward.
fast forward/rewind
source select
pause/play (ATT)

Re: Steering wheel remote - 20/10/1999 05:50

I picked up one of these remotes last night and tried it out, very nice. It would work better for me if the "src" button worked like the bottom button on the empeg and the "att" button worked like the top. Other than that though, they are really nice, good button feedback, easy to hit the right one, etc.

So, how hard is it to reprogram the buttons? :)

I think I'll give that a go. Is there anyone else out there who has these remotes (I know someone does, since they noticed that the extra buttons started working when I added support for it)? Do you agree?

Re: Steering wheel remote - 20/10/1999 07:22

I just picked one up last night, too (after seeing this thread). $30US, and it works like a charm. I agree that it has good tactile response and that I would like to reprogram the buttons. As mine is a line-level source, I never use the volume up/down on either remote. Any ideas on being able to change the buttons' functions?
Thanks

Just ordered a steering wheel remote from here. I drive with hand controls, so this is going to significantly increase my life expectancy.

Kenwood also has the KCA-R7 with photo of a 4 and 5 button steering wheel remote on their website at http://www.kenwoodusa.com/supp_arch_feat.htm?p_ProductDivision=Mobile+Electronics&p_ProductCategory=Remote+Control&x=15&y=8

Why thiese Kenwood steering wheel remotes have a cord? I can't attach one like this to my wheel neatly. Actually i like Blaupunkt ones a lot more (cool design too) is there possible to use that one?

The kenwood steering wheel remotes have the actual transmitter on the end of that cord you mention.
This is quite useful, as it allows you to position the buttons in a comfortable (and safe) position on the wheel, and then place the transmitter so it can "see" the empeg.
