empeg direct connect file transfer

empeg direct connect file transfer - 18/06/2002 10:49

Now that a local friend has gotten an empeg I found myself with another wish. I'd be nice to be able to connect two empegs with an ethernet crossover cable and swap songs through the empeg user interface (no other boxen involved). I know that currently, the disks are mounted read-only unless being updated by emplode, but I was wondering if this would be theoretically possible. Maybe as an external app run through hijack which simulated an emplode file transfer? The thread below about "emplode or jempeg onboard" didn't really touch on this.

Doesn't Jemplode do that?

What about loading a ftp client on one of the boxes? With hijack on the other side, you would be able to send files between them.

To do this, someone would have to write or hack together an ftp client that would run on the empeg that could be controlled with the buttons or remote, right? Or does something like this already exist?

Well the FTP bit, even if controlled by the front buttons or remote buttons, would still only achieve the goal of getting the files physically sent to the other empeg. The missing ingredient would be something on the empeg that can generate the FID files, build the database, etc. Getting MP3's into the fids directory is only the first part of the puzzle.

A simple front-end to emptool, with a user interface to the front-panel buttons, would be cool...

Add me to this wishlist! That would be an awesome idea for us that have other empeg owners nearby. Would be cool if it could be implemented into the search util...ie Search for song -> send to -> Choose Device -> Go -> auto re-build database on remote end.

Neeless to say, extending this thought to cloning empegs may have utility as well. That'd be a great app.

Wouldn't that upset the RIAA?

Of course we would only swap non-copyrighted and public domain music... It's up to each user to be responsible to use the feature properly.

An empeg is like a shovel, it can be used to build or to smack someone on the head but the shovel is always innocent. The tool is amoral. Only the the user can be immoral.

Re: empeg direct connect file transfer - 19/06/2002 08:10

The reasoning assumes their is a moral reason to have the object or that it can have a moral purpose. Some guns for example have no private moral purpose and therefore would not be protected by my statement. For example a m16 has no private moral value. If you need that much firepower to kill a deer you need a new hobby.

A side note: It is also possible for something to be justifiably illegal and yet not be immoral, basically because people can't be trusted to use it correctly.

I was kinda just joking around, not looking to get into serious moral debate over guns..

I don't have a strong opinion on gun ownership at all... I just thought that your statement sounded like the old NRA mantra that I deliberately misquoted.

Sorry for my seriousness, I'm the kind of guy that likes to hang out in coffee shops, argue vehemently over nothing at all and then leave liking everybody more than when I went in.

Well, sometimes we talk about really serious stuff... you should find the thread on Oreo cookies, for example...

Bullets don't kill people, bullets velocity kill people.

Re: empeg direct connect file transfer - 21/06/2002 14:58

And if we really wanted to be picky, we could say it wasn't the velocity, but the trauma experienced by the victim of having an encounter with a bullet moving at a high velocity that actually killed him, but I think the point was made long ago.

lest we digress....is anyone interested in tackling an app like this for the empeg? I have 2 WAP's that I'd love to try out with it.

No, not velocity, bullet momentum and/or kinetic energy.

No, it's "Guns don't kill people, death does".

(I've been playing GTA3 way too much. For anyone not interested in the game, pick it up anyways when it hits $10, the second CD has all the in game radio stations in WAV format, and the 60 mins of "Chatterbox" is well worth it alone.)
