Hard Drive bug

Hard Drive bug - 19/08/1999 10:38

I've got what appears to be a hard-drive bug. On my player the hard drive is spinning up every 25-30 seconds through every song. It spins down again after 5-7 seconds and then spins up again 35-30 seconds later. It hasn't stopped doing this yet this morning. Thoughts?

This isn't a bug. The hard disk spins up to refill the cache - the cache is smaller in the beta releases than it should be in final ones due to the bigger debug code, but depending on the bitrate the drive will spin up from time to time, then spin down again. There's a HDD indicator at the top right of the screen which shows when the drive is being accessed.

I'm sure that is what it is supposed to to Hugo, on my unit it does something a little different.

On some songs it does this behaviour of spinning up for about 7 seconds then spinning down. However on other songs it spins up at the start of the song and stays spun up all the way through it. I am still trying to pin down exactly when this happens, it appears to be connected with the position in the playlist as opposed to the actual MP3, because sometimes the unit will cache correctly on a single MP3, but only when the MP3 is played from a particular playlist...

The permanent caching problem is a known bug in beta5 that affects tracks at the beginning and end of playlists. I've got a fix that should make it into beta6.

Do you mean just the tracks at each end of the playlist, i.e. just two tracks per playlist affected ?
If this is the case then this is wrong, more than two tracks per playlist are affected.

No, multiple tracks at the beginning and end are affected. Between two and four at each end.
