Update - 26/08/1999 12:03

I've just uploaded beta5c to http://www2.empeg.com/upgrades/. A proper announcement will go out tomorrow but I'd quite like a few people to give it a go first.

It's mainly a bug fix release. The new features are minimal.

Please read the release notes before installing.

Send all bug reports to [email protected].

Okay would some one like to let me know what the recovery procedure
is for when things go wrong. Had problems with power to the unit while
it was upgrading and now its unhappy :-(

It had to happen sometime....

Cheers

Excellent news Mike, I like the new visuals (especially scary pulsing Tux).

However I did have one problem with the update, at the end of the process I got an error saying "empeg unit not found at stage 0x10". Everything seems to be working fine on the player.

No trouble with the Update (I had both serial and usb connected, and I forgot to set the unit to use serial, does it default?).
The new visuals are nice (Especially the large pulsing text, and the dotscapes)
However, I noticed a few have gone from the last beta, is there a max number of visuals?
Also, worms has gained the track title, I quite liked it without..

The new visual list...

1 : Filled Oscilloscope
2 : Dot morph
3 : Dot Osc Plane
4 : Dot Morph 2
5 : Oscilloscope
6 : L/R volume with peak
7 : Cube
8 : Medium Bar, No Peak
9 : Wide Bar Peak
10: Medium Bar, No Peak
11: Thin Bar, Peak
12: Really Thin Bar, Peak
13: Thin Mirror Bar, Peak
14: Thin Mirror Bar, No Peak
15: Plasma 1
16: Plasma 2
17: Plasma 3
18: Pulsing Empeg with Tux
19: Large Wavy text, with Star field
20: Large Pulsing Text, With Star field
21: Worms (With title =(
22: Blank
23: Blank

Nice work all.. =)

Just reapply the upgrade. The code on the unit to support upgrading is write protected in flash.

Also, worms has gained the track title, I quite liked it without..

The snakes visual was the first thing to ever run on the display of an empeg beyond simple pixels and rectangles. I then merged it into the player to test the visual architecture before integrating Toby's visuals.

Similarly, Toby asked me if I could provide him with the track info and I needed to test it so snakes was the obvious place.

In summary, snakes is purely a testing visual. I considered removing it from this release but some people seem to like it.

I will remove the track title before the next release. If I remember :-)

Re: Update - 27/08/1999 08:11

That sounds good.. =)

I've noticed a small bug in the large text scrollers..
When it repeats the text (after it has scrolled past once), it gains part of a letter in front of the Artist.

Also, if you switch to aux mode from Mp3 mode, the time into the MP3 sticks in the bottom right of the screen.

So there is no way that one could kill the unit beyond repair by the shop via software problems?

In theory there's no way you can kill it, no. You can trash the flash, erase the hard disk, and still bring up back up using the correct upgrade files. The trick is that the re-flasher resides in hardware write-protected memory at the bottom of flash - this is the bit which witters on about letting fly the penguins of linux if you watch the power-up sequence :)
