RDS Bug and potential user error in R2.00 Final

RDS Bug and potential user error in R2.00 Final - 02/05/2003 10:09

First the bug - this is pertinent to operation in the US. I reported this a long time ago with 2.00Beta13. I noticed that the PTY values/names were nonsensical. Checking an RDBS (US name for RDS) website over here I discovered that the US remapped all the values of PTY to cover the variety of radio stations here. This was not fixed as the tuner/player still uses the European values in R2.00 Final.

The second issue, which may be user error, with R2.00Beta13 I would press and hold the left and right buttons on the player to scan for stations, with R2.00 Final this doesn’t seem to work at all.

Thanks

The second one is a known bug.

I think they were aware of the first one, but don't care because hardly any of the US uses RDS at all.

PTY?

Edit: Program Type. Nevermind.

get your head out of unix, bitt.

PTY = program type, IIRC.

Damn radio broadcast pseudo terminals always causing problems between continents.

I'm pretty sure (not certain) that he's referring to the RDS equivalent of the Genre tag. I've noticed that the one station in my area that transmits useless RDS information (call letters only) transmits this "tag" and that the empeg displays it as being a completely different genre than the station is actually playing.

Edit: Darn, your replies were too fast.

Sorry, I found the second one later.

Re RDS in the US, it is definitely starting to happen in the Boston area. Only four of the Radio stations I listen to don't have RDS, about seven do. For Boston users the radio stations that have RDS (that I have programmed) are BOS, BCN, WODS, Mix-98.5, GBH (one of the NPR stations, and not the crime in the UK), ZLX, Talk 96.9 and a few others that escape my memory. These probably represent the most popular stations in this area. None make use of any of the useful features like TP and AF (AF appears to be superfluous due to most stations being basically local). Infact one can't even workout how to set their time stamp correctly (not even out by whole hours, but 5 hours and 20 minutes!!). This all started happening in the last 12 months, so I think no RDS in the US is no longer accurate and will prove to be completely wrong (in my area) over the next 12 to 24 months.

I do mean Programme Type.

I can't imagine it would be that hard to fix, just another table of words against code numbers, and as you configure the tuner module for North Ameirca or Europe in Emplode, it seems that this is a variable that is already set in the machine - but then I don't write code, so what would I know!

I've noticed that too, for example 99x should say "New Rock" but instead says "Education" and Z93 should say "Classic Rock" and instead says "Drama". However when those radio stations broadcast an RDS message I can see it on the screen such as "Z93 New Home of the Atlanta Falcons" etc...

Check http://www.rds.org.uk/rdsfrdsrbds.html it lists the codes for US and Europe (at the bottom) - if you compare the code words from Europe with the equivalent code words from the US, you normally find the right code number is transmitted, just the Empeg uses the European code names. For example Education in Europe is Rock in the US and Drama is Classic Rock.

Okay, I've officially entered it into bugzilla. I thought it was already in there, but didn't see it when I did a search.
