Ethernet and player rebooting

Ethernet and player rebooting - 25/08/2000 16:02
I have already complained if inability to use emptool via serial line from my RH 5.2 to consumer 1.0 (emplode from NT works OK, as does terminal from both platforms).
I encountered another problem: I brought empeg to my client's office (I spend most my time there) and connected it to their network by unplugging a WinNT PC. They use DHCP, and I don't know much about their network configuration. Anyway, empeg started normally, but when I started emplode from another NT, empeg started rebooting (emplode did not find it). When I exited emplode or unplugged Ether from empeg, reboots stopped. The terminal showed that reboot happens around the time of player start. (BTW, I don't know what was between empeg and emplode-running NT: hub, auto-learning swithch etc, neither I know other configuration details - e.g. about their DHCP).
Any idea?
Thanks!

This may be the bug in 1.00's DHCP. It's fixed in 1.01, which should be out shortly (within the next week hopefully).

Thanks, Hugo. i think i will be able to test it with static address this weekend. BTW, is 1.01 just bug fox release, or are there some new features?

Yeah Hugo, why aren't you out throwing up in a club like a normal person??
Rob
PS OK I'm also on the BBS right now, but I'm not a normal person.

I'm also on the BBS right now, but I'm not a normal person.Well, the difference is that you're the
customer relations director, aren't you. You
need to be here to build customer relations
Good night, anyhow

Nobody @empeg seems to be normal (that's a compliment, of course). Could a normal company of ten normal people pull something like this as just one, not even main, of several projects?

I'm not a director, just a lowly operations manager. This evening my management skills were directed towards sticking postage stamps on 150 replacement serial cable packages. If I hadn't got that job finished I think a few customers might have started some very unpleasant relations with me

It's even more surprising when you consider that most of the car player development was carried out by three people - Hugo, Patrick and Mike. Of course the more recent programmers have contributed bucket loads of features, but those three guys got the Mk.1 to market. Actually, I'd better not overlook Toby, who wrote all of the visuals except "Snakes" (although he has an updated version now, in which each snake reacts to a different frequency in the music!).

Not quite true, John was working on stuff before the mk1 shipped to general customers (though I think nrs 1,2 & 3 went out in a pre-john state :) ).

1.01 is bugfix, yes. 1.1 is the release with new features, which is a little further off as it's quite a big one. The windows stuff has had a large amount of work done on it by Roger, plus Peter, John & Mike have been hard at work too. I've just been trying to find components for the next run & doing service work :)

on a side note, my empeg works fine with a static ip address, but not with dhcp. is there possibly a solution for this in 1.01? not a big deal as it works fine static, but just wondering.

Hopefully 1.01 should fix all outstanding DHCP problems. I can't remember the exact fix, but it was something to do with the server id in the DHCPREQUEST packet which was treated differently by some DHCP servers (eg the one in my Linksys WAN router/switch)

that is good news for me. if it works for you, it should work for me as i too have a linksys cable modem router. looking forward to it.

I took my home network down & bought the linksys box into the office to replicate the problem, so it definitely *does* work now :)
