Emplode display problems - 01/10/2000 14:17

(cc'd from bugs@empeg)
Hey,

I'm experiencing a wierd display glitch w/ emplode.. It seems that it can't really handle large desktops (2048x768 dual monitor configuration); if emplode's in the second window (x=>1024, y<768), it freaks out... clicking on the title bars of the smaller window (i.e. empegcar:1) make it jump back and forth between different display modes, but you can't access any of the music tunes as the display just keeps changing w/ each click.. moving the window to the first screen fixes the problem...

Hmm, I wonder if Microsoft tested MFC in dual monitor configurations. I can't really think of anything we do that would affect this.

I wonder if empeg will buy me a pair of G400's and another monitor so I can test this... :-)

Sorry, you don't need a pair of G400's.
The dual head is so called because it has 2 ports and can drive 2 monitors at the same time... =)

Why did I know you were going to say this?

If it makes you feel any better, Emplode's not the only software that has trouble with dual monitors.

I particularly love the software that starts in the middle of the screen. My two monitors are side-by-side, and the software starts with half on one and half on the other.

Emplode doesn't seem to have a problem on mine, and I'm at 1152x864 on both of them.

Re: Emplode display problems - 03/10/2000 12:01

Hm, if you're running a G400, newer Powerdesk's can tell programs to pick a monitor. You can have certain ones always go to a certain monitor, or have a default for all programs, etc. Dunno how much of that functionality is built into the W98/W2K multi monitor logic.

I picked up a couple of the original Matrox Milleniums at eBay for ~$80 total. But then I only run X@1024x768x16 on my two monitors, no games, so for me the current generation of cards are ridiculously overspeced.

So, with two I could have four monitors....

Mmm, I thought that. So in fact what he^W I wants is a big stack of Voodoo3 2000 PCI cards. Sixty quid a pop.

Besides, in order to protect their margins on pro multimonitor cards, Matrox slug the RAMDAC on the second head of a G400 to 150MHz, so you can't do more than about 1280x1024 on it.

Re: Emplode display problems - 04/10/2000 08:39

So, with two I could have four monitors....

The scene: Mike's sitting at his workstation, his new 4-monitor setup humming along nicely. All four monitors are scrolling packet traces of a large ethernet download. Rob approaches from behind.

Mike: Whoa! Rob. You scared the bejeezus outta me.

Rob: Sorry.

Mike: It's okay.

Rob: Is that...

Mike: ...the new download protocol? Yeah.

Rob: Do you always look at it encoded?

Mike: Well, you have to. If the player crashes during the download, there's no way to recover what data got sent. And there's way too much information to store in a log file. You get used to it. I don't even see the code any more. All I see is Green Day, Pearl Jam, Britney Spears...

Thanks, got a colleague here who keeps nagging because I bought the Hercules Prophet DDR (Geforce 2 card) ...He just doesn't seem to understand I can barely fit one 19 inch monitor on the desk at home, let alone 2 ... What use is a G400 to me then. Now I have an nice piece of info to tell him of with

Blimey, Peter! Where can you get the Voodoo 2000 PCIs at that price?

http://www.dabs.com -- actually it was 65 knicker when I looked just then, but I'm sure they were banging them out for 60 notes last time I looked.

Re: Emplode display problems - 04/10/2000 12:50

Except now they've done the G450 which combines the ramdac's into the main chip, so the 2nd output will do 1600x1200...

Disclaimer, I don't own a matrox, I've got an old ATI rage fury... =)

Re: Emplode display problems - 04/10/2000 18:38

I particularly love the software that starts in the middle of the screen.

This seems to be peculiar to the G400 architecture. A friend of mine has this
setup with a pair of 17 inch monitors under win2k, and an awful lot of stuff
seems to divide itself down the line between the screens. The same thing
happens when you maximise a window, it spreads to fill both screens. I believe
it's because the G400 frame buffer is treated as a single block of memory,
rather than two independant ones, such as you get with two different cards
installed.

It may be something that can be fixed in the driver, I suppose.

I have tried multiple cards in my dual-processor machine, under both 98 and
2000. It works really nicely, with the sole problem that my nice new ATI
All-in-Wonder 128 video in/out/everything card breaks horribly when another
graphics card is present .

I'm using an ATI All in Wonder (original) with a GeForce2 64MB DDR board and there are no interactions.

Good one. Did Toby come up with a Matrix visualization for the green empeg?

Re: Emplode display problems - 06/10/2000 03:45

Matrix Visualisation ....

OH YES PLEASE !!!

Of course, that would mean that along with my original Blue faceplate, and the Red faceplate I ordered for my BMW, I would now need to buy a GREEN one too ...

Hey what the hell

PRETTY PLEASE !!!

Cheers,
Hans

OMG that would be so cool. Somebody put that on the wish list.

I WAS JUST GONNA POST THAT! hahah. Weird. Last night i was looking through the pictures from the empeg meet and saw a screen with a ton of random numbers and letters overlapping...first thing that hit me...the MATRIX!! we SOOOO need that visual it's sickening. oh man... if i could describe what i'm picturing.. you could have the streaming layers of 1's and 0's and to make it active the layers could shift forward in on the z axis with the beat, the ones in front moving farther forward and being brighter....oh man.. DAMMIT all..why didn't i learn to code!

Re: Emplode display problems - 06/10/2000 13:46

Make it optionally go sideways. Don't do any z axis nonsense, it should look as close to the matrix visualizations as possible. The speed of the matrix drips should correlate to the bpm, and the location of the drips correleating to the frequency. and every time a peak occurs in a freqency a drip will zoom by correlating to that. That way when you have your music thumping on the bass, you'll get a lot of drips on the left side, slow moving if the beat is slow, fast moving if the beat is fast. If you have orchestral, it'll go wild, or some guitar riffs you'll see drips occuring to the right side..
