Umlauts missing in visuals - 05/09/2001 03:22

Hi,

when using the visuals, umlauts are not displayed. (i.e. when using the infotext visuals)

The new version of the visuals (not yet released) has a full character set

What's considered a "full" character set?

Or, equivalently, what character set does the player support?

When I've looked in tags on the player, they appear to be encoded as ISO-8859.1 or similar; does this mean that characters outside the Latin-1 set (e.g. Welsh vowels w and y with circumflex) are not representable?

I don't see a solution short of going to full Unicode (or perhaps restricting ourself to 8-bit ISO sets and introducing a tag specifying which to use). My titles have a lot of Latin2 (ISO-8859-2) characters, and there are users from Israel, those who write in one of variants of Cyrilic... I am affraid we will be stuck with Latin1 for a while Not the end of the world - I have grown up with pure 7-bit ASCII in '70s.

IIRC, ID3v2 allows labelling of encodings - I guess emptool and emplode probably ignore these and assume ISO-8859.1 instead...

ID3v2 supports 8859-1, UTF-16, and (in v2.4.0) UTF-8.

Currently, emptool/emplode ignore UTF-16 and UTF-8 tags -- not that there's much else we can do, with only 8859-1 fonts on the player. This is, of course, a Bad Thing for those who want their songs labelled in Cyrillic, Hebrew, Welsh etc, let alone ideographic languages, but other car-player work has just always had higher priority.

We might do something with Unicode tags for some future car-player release (with UTF-8 on the player), but it won't be in 2.0.

Sorry if I sounded ungrateful - I agree with the above, and don't currently have any non-Latin-1 tags. It's simply an idle interest for me .

Keep up the good work!
