That is, by far, the important thing.

I wasn't trying to admonish above. In fact, few of us probably leave enough room in most situations to satisfy the rules. They're all based on the idea that someone in front of you might have to slam on brakes for a legitimate reason so you shouldn't be following so closely. But it seems to me that if the person slams on brakes for no good reason, then it should be his fault, but then cops would have to think and defend their conclusions, which isn't likely to happen.

Ah, well, as I say, it's best that no one was hurt.
