Another weird thing that it is doing is the volume keeps showing up on the screen every 30 seconds or so with no buttons being touched. Very strange.

Ooo dead giveaway. I'll bet it's something to do with the volume knob. I assume it's one of your 2a units?

I wonder if the optical sensor on the knob was sensing some slight randomness to the data. I wonder if that's possible?
