Is it possible to disassemble the empeg just to the point where the face plate is a separate piece?

I'm trying to figure out what my options are. Would it work to have the empeg in one location with wires running to a dash-mounted face plate? Can I consider putting the empeg in the trunk and the face plate on the dash? I realize this would mean that I can't just take the unit into my house to load music, but I'd be content to do file transfers from my laptop in the car.
