How about a visual of a luminglas? This is the name of the plasma / lightning disk usually seen in sci-fi movies for effect. Its biggest claim to fame is in the Star Trek series in the Borg regeneration stations - the circle of lightning above the head of the borg. It could be made to move in time with the audio stream.
