As I understand it, the version 1 and 2 iPod's software was done (at least mostly) by a third party. The version 3 iPod's software was done in house and may or may not have been based on the previous software. I figure that gives them an excuse for not supporting many new features on the oldest iPods. I'm not sure that any of the changes from the v3 to v4 iPod where significant enough for most people to really care if they made it to the older players.
