AFIK, there are three editions of each movie: Platinum Series Special Extended Edition, Platinum Series Special Extended Edition Collector's Gift Set, Widescreen Edition, and Full Screen Edition. The latter two are just the movie as shown in theaters with no particualr extras. The Platinum Series is the extended versions of the movies with a buch of extras. The Gift Sets are the Platinum Series plus a little statue, basically. IMO, you want the Platinum series, non-gift set. There's also a box that contains that version of all three movies that Amazon lists as "The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Special Extended DVD Edition)".
