More specifically, holding down shift skips the following items (if I recall correctly):
- Anything in the Startup group (both the All Users and the Current User).
- The Load= and Run= lines in win.ini
- The Run and RunOnce sections of the registry (there are a few of those under software/microsoft/windows/currentversion in both the Current User and Local Machine keys).
So, if you've got a problem with windows not booting unless you hold Shift, the culprit is in one of those places.
