There's no "theoretically" about it. Back when I was in high school track, I used to train using hurdles (I ran steeplechase). Hitting hurdles, even just clipping them with your heel, throws off your stride. It wasn't so much a problem with the non-weighted hurdles -- a light breeze was enough to blow them over, sometimes.
