12v=mute, 0v=normal.

Is that how all the other devices work? The (admittedly few) units I know use open/12V = normal and ground/0V = mute. If that's standard (which I'm not really sure about, but at least I thought so - this requires some more investigation), then the empeg should adhere to that standard.

Most UK kits use ground=mute. The vast majority of the kits we see are Nokia, and they definitely work that way.

Dominic,

Do they generally use open circuit or 12V for the non-mute state?

Hmm, now you're asking....

I'm pretty sure it's +12. If you mail me at work, I'll look into it tomorrow AM when I'm back there.

When I made my PIC muter for my Nokia 6110 (original Nokia handsfreekit)
Ground = mute, Open (no 12v) = unmute.

I installed just a Motorola timeport handsfree and this is sending 12V out on the mute wire (so it would work with the empeg), and nothing when not in a call.

That mostlikely is the standard I think. Otherwise, if there would be nothing connected to the mute wire on the car stereo, it would be always in mute which doesnt make sense.

Anyways, I have just installed another Philips Carin navigation system, and there you can select if you would like to use 12V or 0 V for mute. J.

The vast majority of aftermarket radios look for a ground to phone mute. There are a few exceptions like Alpine and VDO, that allow for either. The OEM stuff that does have mute facility also tends to be ground signalled - VW, Audi, etc.

This functionality will be configurable - either 0V or 12V mute. It won't work with open circuit signalling though. A pull up resistor would be needed in this instance.
