This is silly, but I was watching Alias on TV tonight, and I noticed that in a scene where Sydney was hacking a computer, the term OpenSSH was on the screen. I just find it interesting that they apparently have a consultant working on the show that apparently knows enough about computers to make some reasonable name-drops.

Neat.

That's good. The effort is what counts in TV/Movies. What movie were they doing 'virus design' in Autocad?

OTOH they apparently don't have a space consultant (or anybody that's ever been to the museum at KSC).. did you see the episode a few weeks ago where they used a Saturn V to launch a satellite?

I think the AutoCAD virus was in Swordfish.

Unfortunately, the IP address she quoted was 255.Whatever. Tsk Tsk. Get a tech advisor to check the script please...

At least it wasn't on a powerbook, though.

I caught that (Oh, Jennifer!), but I am going to guess that this was the equivalent of the anonymizing "555" phone numbers routinely used in American movies/TV. That would suggest that they have more of a clue rather than less.

Be nice to Sydney!!

Well, the first one was a valid address, started with 199.23.something.

for the record, the addresses reserved for private networks are as follows:

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

Depending on your needs. You get to choose from an A, B, or C class.

True. (Dammit, that was *MY* IP address!! Another case of drunken scriptwriters!)

I haven't watched this show in an eon, but I see we have a kinder, gentler La Femme Sydney...."I'm going in. That guy's been sedated."

Oooooh, sedate *ME*.

Hmmm I think she should have used good ol' 127.0.0.1.

But she can ping me anytime.

Hey, it was a cutaway to a closeup of the computer screen. And I'd like to point out that if I wasn't staring so hard at the TV in the first place, I would have missed it.

At least they weren't projecting the data on the screen on the operator's face. I hate it when they do that in movies, and whenever data is being displayed on a screen, the monitor doesn't make any noise.
