you can modify an id3 tag in those mp3's, and the playlists that they are in will change icons in emplode. Then just close emplode without syncing, unless you want to save changes

Note that refs > 1 is normal for most people. It means that you made another link to the same file in another playlist. I have many songs that are this way, residing both in album playlists and mood playlists.

Refs = 0 is the one usually indicating a problem, i.e., a song that's not in any playlist.

If you use jEmplode, you can right-click "Colorize" a tune and it will colorize the path to all the playlists the song is in...

i try to have a one-to-one relationship between my hdd and empeg, so there shouldnt be any reason whatsoever to have more than one ref each.... so anyway, i'll try colorize when i get home. thanks everyone.

Erm, I don't think you need to change the 1 to 1 relationship, in as far as the actual tracks go - but a lot of the power of the empeg comes from the way playlists can work. You wouldn't want to have 4 copies of a track just so you can have unique instances for each playlist, would you? I know I have tracks which are in 3 or 4 playlists - some in my 'party' list, 'heavy', 'driving' and 'band practice' lists.
