I'm sure many of you work in cubicles where you're forced to have your back to your ``door'', and have some sort of convex mirror to see behind you.

Where did you find it? The only one I can find is CHIMP over at ThinkGeek, but I think that that's too small for my purposes. I think I'd prefer one that's about 5" in diameter, and preferably have an arm like a rear-view mirror.

Anyone have any ideas?

So you can close the BBS window when the boss walks in?

Or stop playing NetHack. Whatever.

Really, it just makes me nervous to not be aware of what's going on behind me, which is exacerbated by listening to the empeg via headphones.

car auto shops. They have the little convex mirrors that you put on your rearview... works perfect. I've got one on top of my monitor. Costs about $4 too. I don't know about 5" though. Actually, there's a junk type store around here in SF that had boxes of ACTUAL rearview mirrors for cars, with the plastic surround and everything. i was gonna go this weekend and get one to stick on the side of my monitor... hah!

I actually bought a rearview mirror, but the field of vision isn't great. Maybe I'll look for some larger of those convex dealies.

(Oh, you mean a side-view mirror, don't you? That might work -- ``objects in mirror are closer than they appear'' == slightly convex)

Links not working (at least for me).

But when I worked in a car accessory shop (between high scool/military service/university) we had some fairly large (5"x8" or so) size mirrors used on trucks. Mounts to a 1/2" or so tube and came in both convex and flat.

The chimp mirror actually works really well surprisingly. I have one at work and it gives you a great field of view. but it dose feel chip, and would probably break if dropped a few times. But for $10 buck its worth it. Ps. the one I have sticks on with Velcro

hmmm. well, just go to kragen.com and search for mirror. There are quite a few that fit your bill Bitt.

Yeah, I'd go for the C.H.I.M.P. mirror, too. I used to have one just lke it that I got from a SunMicro booth at a conference. It kept the CEO from catching me goofin off many a time.

trust me, the chimp thing is overpriced. Just pick up a 3-4 dollar convex mirror at your local auto parts store. it's exactly the same thing, you get a bunch of different sizes to choose from, and you don't have to pay shipping. =]

Good call, Loren. I got a sticky-backed 3.75" convex mirror at the AutoZone for about $2. Now I just have to figure a good way to mount it that doesn't provide me with too much of my ugly mug in the reflection.

We all just turned our desks around to face towards the door. Pissed off the facilities manager but that's OK, she got over it... [laugh} Of course you need plenty of room to do that...

You also need desks that aren't integrated into the cubicle walls. Otherwise, I'd have done that long ago.

True... We have tables/desks that aren't attached, and most of us are actually in walled offices... Les Nesman days are over... Contractors get the cubes, of which we have very few nowdays.

My dilemna is face the window or the door. I used to face the window and stare out at the idiots on Loop 360 all day. Now if I face the window I stare at the smokers all day. I think I got gyped on the move to the 2nd floor...

You've already got your mirror, but I was originally going to say one of those convex rearview mirrors that give a "panoramic" view might work...

I tried one, but it's only convex in one dimension, and, for some reason, even though I could technically see everything in it, it was hard to get my brain to comprehend the horizontal image quickly. I have no explanation for that, but it just didn't work out for me.

I really did want to get a rear-view mirror, though, with an arm that I could have adhered to the shelves at the top of the cube. That would have cooool. (Or maybe that should be that be k-rad, d00d.)
