I pulled my Empeg out of the sled this morning when i got to work as per usual and sat it in my lap as i got the carrying case out. When i picked up the Empeg to slap it in the good ol' case, i noticed that the Warrany Void if Removed sticker was wearing down on the corner of the metal and that some of the metal beneath the sticker was actually showing through. I'll have to check during lunch if there's some burr or something inside of the sled that's wearing it down or if it's being done by the front edge of the sled when i insert it, but needless to say this worries me a tad! I don't wanna loose my warranty because the sticker wears down from normal use. If i do loose it i want it to be for a legit hacking attempt! So, question is what to do about this i guess. Has anyone else had this happen to their sticker? How can i prove that I haven't cut it if i need repairs or an upgrade? I'm going to take a picture with my digital cam when i get home tonight and post to show exactly what i'm talking about and so i can document it. Cheers!

Greetings!

Maybe just a clear piece of tape (I think someone here is fond of 3M???) on top of the sticker? This way, the tape will protect the sticker from further deterioration, and you would still be able to see that the sticker is mostly in-tact. Actually, just letting them know about the issue here may be enough for the empeg folks...

Yes, mine is also on its way out. But it's nothing to do with rubbing in the sled, it's just the metal is flexible and breaks the sticker when you handle the unit.

I checked it out at lunch and there is in fact sticker "residue" or whatever you wanna call it on the top corner of the sled. I'll have to be more careful when i slide it in from now on.

Hmm, yeah, mine is wearing a little, just the seam itself, right on the corner of the Empeg housing. But I ain't opening my Empeg for anything. I know my limitations, I'm a software guy. :)

We're well aware of this.

We've never refused a warranty repair on the basis of the sticker alone. We know exactly how players get damaged by misuse and on the rare occassion this happens the client usually owns up to it when we present the engineers report.

If your warranty label does break, however, I don't suggest that you use it as an excuse to poke around inside the player. Players can be damaged as a result of some very stupid mistakes, often made by very intelligent people. The inside of the player isn't foolproofed like a PC might be, and the biggest fools are often those with the most knowledge. A number of empeg employees have demonstrated this

Wasn't empeg going to change to an internal sticker?

Hasn't someone said something about an internal sticker already? - Oh I remember. I saw an internal sticker on someone's empeg site on the shockmount of the hdd's, right?

I think the main reason to open the empeg would be to add a second hdd. and then you would have to break the internal warranty sticker, right?

I'm thinking about upgrading my Mk2 with a 30 Gig hdd. (I'll wait till they get cheaper...)
Rob - could you maybe tell us what the main problems are when upgrading a hdd. which failures can be made which destroy the empeg? what would a repair cost? In this case?

The most common mistake is plugging either the disk or display cable onto the main board offset by a row of pins. If you do this with the display cable you will blow three surface mount fuses - but there is no reason to remove this cable to perform a disk upgrade.

You also need to be careful with the VFD - the glass tube is generally very strong, but the fill nipple (near the rotary control) can be easily snapped off if struck.

When removing and refitting the drive mount care has to be taken not to scrape any components on the back of the display board or on the main board.

When fitting a second drive, insulating tape must be fitted to the mounting plate to prevent components on the underside of the drive shorting to the metalwork.

I think that pretty much summarises the common problems. Repair costs vary, but in general labour will be charged at $50 an hour and a new VFD costs around $75.

We are introducing internal stickers, yes.
