Well, after 3 years, I've finally gotten rid of the alternator whine.

All it took was me accidently blowing the amps (errr I need to mind B+ and GND)

I had them repaired (for free ) and when I got them back, and reinstalled them, no further alternator whine exists. I'm almost positive that there was a problem with the amps from the get go (which a few people here suggested).

In the process I also upgraded to 16G speaker wire all the way around (from 18G) which really improved how the car sounds as well.

Now, since i've been without music for 3 weeks, I'm in the process of upgrading to 3.0a5, the latest version of hijack, and loading some new tunes

Congrats! That's what fixed mine too (swapping the amp in desperation). I'm surprised very few resources recommend this.

I'm surprised very few resources recommend this.
Fortunately, the FAQ is one of those which does.

The FAQ is not "a" resource. It is The resource.

I sitll have "alternator whine" in mine but only when it's in aux mode. I only use that when I'm listening to talk radio these days or an occassional sports game so I haven't been in too much of a hurry to correct it (basically b/c I don't have the time).

I think there was a thread about it? Possibly that a ground on the mother board of the empeg could be blown? Not real sure though.

Interestingly enough, I tore the amp apart and resoldered the rca's onto the board and the whine went away.... Until I bought new speakers and began to play with the amp again. Maybe a new amp will correct my problem as well. The only thing that leans me away from the amp now is that it's only in aux mode. Weird.

You might need to ground the RCAs from the aux input to the empeg... I remember a thread about that too.
