I have taken the 100 gb disk back to the store and I now have a Seagate 40 gb running. I was able to load songs on the initial synch and everything was fine. At the moment I am trying to put some more songs on the player and have noticed that the synchronising icon is frozen on the player. Emplode is in the "uploading tunes" mode and the is a warning that one song(so far) couldn't be synchronised. Emplode shows that it is writing a song but the blue bar doesn't appear to be moving and I would estimate that it's be like this for 20minutes and I'm not touching it until someone points me in the right direction!

Hmmm... The sync icon is not moving around on the screen at all? I cannot remember if the disk check froze it, or if it is normal. I would give it another 20 minutes. Disk checks can take a long time.

Given that this was a brand new 40GB drive, I assume you ran the builder and loaded the software on it with an upgrade file. Correct? (Just checking)

Yes the sync icon is frozen it is stuck on the right side of the player and yes I ran the builder and I loaded the player with the developer software. I have been out for over an hour now and I now have six songs with warnings on them and there are four more songs to upload.

Did you move or rename any of the files after you dragged them into emplode? Are you using USB?

No I did not move or rename any file and I am using USB. I also would like to install Tony's Logo Editor but where do I save the file to? Does it get saved in any of the Rio's files?

This is "normal" behaviour in early empeg releases, up to about v2beta9 (?) or so (forgot, exactly), due to the "jiffies" bug in those kernels.

Phew, you have no problem asking about 20 unrelated questions at the same time, have you?

You really have to try and stay on the track of what you are discussing, or people simply cannot help.

You can get Tony's LogoEdit from the RioCar site (see hot link at the top of the page). You will download a ZIP file to disk. Just create a new directory, unpack the ZIP file into it and run the program from there. There are instructions on Tony's site.

Which version of emplode is installed on your PC?

Which version of Windows are you using?

Which version of the player firmware (be precise) have you installed on your player (hopefully using the upgrader)?

Have you tried to install any third party software, such as HiJack? If so, can you provide us with details?

How many disks are in the player? Have they all been prepared by the disk builder firmware? Are they properly jumpered as Master and Slave drives?

Finally, you need to provide either logs of data exchanges with the player from emplode, or at the very least a serial log of the boot of your player, or you may as well just sit there whistling Dixie! No-one here can see your screen or handle your player. You are our eyes and ears: if you are not accurate in what you report here and PUT IN SOME EFFORT YOURSELF, then how do you expect people to help you?

Question: What is your physical location (country / region)? It might be that you have a board member / empeg owner nearby that can take a look at it and get it up and running for you. Once it is running, the player is usually very easy to operate.

Any Philly folks out there with some spare time?

Do you have any music on the player at this point? If not, I would like you to do a step by step build, verifying each step, just to make sure that everything is okay. Can you get to the command prompt / shell on the player?

You are not gonna believe this one! I gave the 40 GB one last shot last night and I know before that I followed everything step by step but I was signed in on my DSL while I did the disk upgrade. Well this time I decided that I would try it not signed in at all and lo and behold everything worked! It hasn't frozen while synching at all. I was able to put on about 2 gigs of music as of last night! It must have been the fact that I was signed on to my DSL that made things not work I not sure about that but I know it worked. Thanks to everyone for all your help!

Do you connect through a router to both the DSL modem and the empeg? The empeg has a 10Mbps network link only, and there have been instances where routers that auto detect speed do not work right.

You may want to consider a dedicated crossover cable between the computer and the empeg, or putting a 10Mb hub in front of the player. This way you will not need to worry about your connection.

Glad it works! Enjoy!

No I don't use a router at all I had the Empeg hooked directly to the computer via the serial cable. I guess I should invest in a router.

Were you trying to upload music via the serial connection? While you can do that, it's slooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Always upload music through either USB or Ethernet.

Is your computer connected to anything else via the ethernet port? (cable modem?). If not, you can get a "crossover" ethernet cable instead of a router and connect the computer directly to the empeg. This is how I tip toed my way into ethernet. Not only is it faster, but there are tons of cool features that are only available with the ethernet cable.

Maybe we should start pushing that IRC chat room more!

Yes my computer is hooked up to a DSL Modem via ethernet cable. I didn't even know that there was a chat room. Where can I find it?

I do use UB to upload my music but it may to time to use ethernet especially if I am missing out on some cool features I can't get with serial or USB.
