I will likely be glued to the TV tomorrow watching coverage of the Live 8 concerts. Anyone else? Anyone actually going to any of the shows? If the lineup for Philadelphia wasn't so awful, I'd totally be there, but somehow, Will Smith and Bon Jovi just don't seem worth driving 5 hours for...

Anyway, the lineup in London is obviously phenomenal, but the one that I'm really eager to see is the Pink Floyd "well, it's not really a reunion" reunion. I've read all sorts of stories, from "we're just doing this for Bob," to "the hatchet is buried, we're a big happy family again," so who knows if anything will come of this in the future. Heck, until the last chord is played, I'm pretty skeptical that all four of them will show up... Nonetheless, it's cool that an event like this has at least for the time being brought them together for the first time in 20+ years.

So, what's everyone else looking forward to seeing?

Hey, it can't be 20+ years, I am not that old! (Was that nice concert with fantastic lighting somewhere in Italy realy more than 20 years ago? Sigh... )

According to this:

http://www.pinkfloydonline.com/history4.html

They last all played together live in 1993, so not quite 20 years yet.

Like I'm sure many of you did, I text for tickets and was disappointed not to get any. I just have to console myself with V at Stafford in August and U2 a couple of weeks ago down in Twickenham.

I dealt with an online shop for the U2 tickets which was a complete farce. I had to end up getting the tickets from the ground on the day. They claimed all the standing tickets had been stolen so they upgraded us to a hospitality box at the back of the ground. Free buffet but NO BEER! This did eventually get sorted out but not until the concert had started and so marred proceedings a little.

I'm not an avid U2 fan but they but on an excellent show.

I think the important distinction that's being lost here is that the "all" referred to upthread is the lineup including Roger Waters, which definitely hasn't played together in over 20 years.

My boss went to the Cardiff show this week, said it was very good value - something like 4 hours in total.

Funnily enough he will be seeing it twice - he was given these at the last minute but had already got tickets for the October MSG show and asked me if I wanted to go (not U2, just NY which should be fun, never been before)

That'll teach me to read the whole of a web page before quoting selectively from it and getting it wrong. It was all there on that page I linked to, if only I had bothered to read it all

The 1993 album and shows most emphatically did not include Roger Waters. Neither did the 1986-1990 period.

And when Roger Waters did a "Wall" show at the Berlin wall, those did not include David Gilmour.

I would, however, like to see documentation on any other possible points in time that Roger and David may have played together since Final Cut. But I was under the impression that there haven't been any. Thus the reason the Live 8 thing is a Big Deal for Pink Floyd fans.

Ah, I see! (Obviously, I am not that much of a fan; I just noticed that I have Pink Floyd listed as the author of "Amused to Death", rather than Waters )

I suppose that expecting Syd Barret would be too much (he isstill alive, isn't he?)...

For some undetermined value of "alive," yes. Then again, there are those that would argue that Keith Richards is also alive...

I had set my receiver to record the whole show, but I had obviously not cleared enough space because it stopped just before Pink Floyd and when I noticed it had stopped, they were midway through Comfortably numb.... ARRGHH!

So, Andy, would it be possbile to get the Pink Floyd part from you in some way?

If anyone is interested I should be able to supply an MPEG2 PS file, or an MPEG4 cut just of the floyd in action. We watched/listened to it last night on analogue TV which, in this country is probably the best way to watch it.

Who on earth at the beeb came up with the idea, faced with two programmes of uncertain length, live8 and Wimbledon, to swap them between one channel and another in the middle: Should have been 4.15, eventually happened at 6.15, I was watching bits of it on Sky, whose people obviously had no idea what was going on. I have odd bits between REM and UB40, unless that was Annie Lennox serving at Wimbledon, and nothing after the middle of Mariah Carey.
Mrs. Boxer being the persevering type, won two tickets, the boxette coulsn't go, so she gave them to two old school friends who phoned us mid evening absolutely hysterical with the excitement of it all.

Hmm, seems the Mythbox had a bit of a hard time. I appear to only have 2 20G files instead of the 5 or 6 4 or 5G files. It looks like it's stuck some stuff together, I'm not really surprised, asking it record several programs all with the same/similar names with overlapping times on multiple channels, something I've certainly never asked it do before.

I've located the Pink Floyd and The Who's performances, so I can make copies of those sections. Anything else is going to be a multiple DVD+/-R job.

This blog entry pretty much sums up my opinion of the MTV coverage of Live 8:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/ericzorn/weblog/archives/2005/07/i_dont_want_my.html

What utter garbage. The miracle of BitTorrent is the only thing keeping me from burning down the MTV headquarters.

In regards to the Pink Floyd show, I was very impressed. It was great to see my favorite band back in the configuration they were last in long before they were my favorite band. Sadly, they've ruled out a future reunion, saying they're "too old." I dunno, maybe they are, but that hasn't stopped other way-past-their-prime acts from hitting the road. Sure, there's no guarantee that the shows would be as good as the Live8 performance, and it's not like they need the money... But it was really great to hear them all together again, and it'd be nice if they could do one more tour with the canonical lineup, even if they have to do it with wheelchairs and walkers.

If anyone's interested, I can bring a complete(*) recording on a
USB disk, 25 GB big. It's a raw uncut recording made on a
Hauppauge Nexus-S card, filtered through pvastrumento.

It's best played using a DVD player program.

TBH, Pim's DVB-S stream will be of a slightly higher quality as the BBC satellite channels are statmuxed at a higher average rate than the DVB-T streams. I'll by all means bring my files with me as probably just bring my HD enclosure along for the trip.

AOL also have free streaming of the London, Philly and Toronto gigs (complete with handy links direct to the individual Pink Floyd numbers):

http://music.channel.aol.com/live_8_concert/london_philly_toronto

It uses their own ActiveX based player, so not much hope of saving the stream or working on anything but Windows I guess ?

I didn't see Pink Floyd live on the day, they have still got it haven't they

In case anyone wants to know, these are the specs

video:

mpeg2 ps
resolution 720 x 576
aspect ratio 16:9
frame rate 25 fps
nominal bitrate 8 mbps
average bitrate +4 mbps

audio:

mpeg1, layer2
stereo 48 kHz
bitrate 256 kbps

I'm not sure for BBC channels, but I do know Dutch DVB-T streams
have a lower resolution as well as a lower bitrate than their DVB-S
counterparts.

I have my USB disk ready. It's NTFS formatted. The files will not fit on
FAT filesystems, including FAT32.
