I have a ethernet card that I am trying to set up on my notebook computer. My brother-in-law owns a business and someone was leasing a building from him and suddenly split town after writing about $40,000 in bad checks. (It was a large warehouse.) He basically had to just suck up the loses. He did manage to get a notebook computer for himself that was left in the building by the guy. The computer was wiped clean, so no software. It did come with a 3Com ethernet card however. He gave me the card because he will never be near a LAN and has no use for it.

So (sorry for the long background story), now I have this 3Com "Megahertz" 10/100 LAN card Model 3CCFE575BT. I went to 3Com's web site and downloaded the software, but I have not been able to install it with any success. All of the instructions tell me to "contact your admin" and "plug into your network". My question is: How do I just set up a peer-to-peer with the empeg? I realize that asking for step-by-step instruction is too much to ask, but if anyone has some basic instructions or an overview, I might be able to figure it out. At this point, I am really clueless as to how to do this.

Running Win 98. and I DO have a crossover cable for the peer-to-peer.

Thanks to anyone who can help! (or sympathizes! :) )

Try this:

Install the driver files (without the card in)
YOu should have an OEMSETUP.INF file or some other INF file in one of the folders the install creates.
Jam the card in and P&P should see it and ask for drivers.
Point it in the direction of the folder you found earlier.
This should install the card (visible in system properties)
Go to network properties
Add -- Protocol -- Microsoft --- TCP/IP
Got to TCP/IP properties
Choose Manual IP address
Look at the empeg's about screen (the IP address bit)
Enter an IP that is just 1 different in the last digit
ie. empeg is 192.168.0.1
Then set it to 192.168.0.2
Click OK on all except the restart windows bit.
Eject the card, wait for the beep and reinsert.

Job's a good'n

Don't forget about the subnet-mask.
It should be 255.255.255.0.
The subnet-mask is for defining if an IP packet will route to the gateway or if it will be sent direktly to the given IP.
As your IP's are 192.168.0.1 and .. 0.2 with this subnet-mask it'll be fine.

Great! I got it to work for sync's. Thank you everyone for your help! (Could there be an FAQ entry for this?)

When I click on network neighborhood, I don't see the empegcar. Is this normal? Maybe I need a reboot...

Now I am going to tackle displayserver! :)

You won't see it in Network Neighborhood unless SMB support (samba) is installed on the player.

No. Franks got good directions on his website. All you will really need is the install file. If you want to control the empeg remotely, you will need a new kernel, which I believe Frank has as well.
