I've already been able to upload everything but 'timed' to the sbin/init directory.
Actually I read that part wrong it is as you say NOT a dir as I thought but something I am to add to as I read it again. I don't have display server installed, only recently have I successfully installed the 'Picker'& 'AdjVol' but then Tony's instructions were very thorough w/it.
Thanks for the help, I like doing stuff like this, eventually I'll get it.

Then /sbin/init is already a textfil. You should have a copy of it
somewhere on your disk. Then you can edit it there and reupload - make
sure to save it in unix format! Or you can upload a small text editor
and edit in place. That was discussed about a week ago, here.
I think the (to be) /sbin/init file is called "testinit" in the
VolAdj/Picker package, and testinit.sh copies/renames it to /sbin/init.

Is Tony vacationing or something?!

Last weekend, I was. This week, I've dismantled the home-office to paint and recarpet it, so I have no PC at home. Work's been busy this week, too, so I've been restraining myself and only replying to small stuff.

I think i shall wait till 1.1 before i know what the time is

Wait, we haven't told you yet to consult this or this !

Seriously, I think that simpler of those documents Michael pointed to (DOS to Linux shells comparison and bash basics) will be enough to a total Linux novice to follow all howtos that appear on the board.

Thanks, Michael! Let me just add Linux Journal Helpdesk and correct a typo in your link to Linux Users Guide (downloadable in variety of formats, handy to browse at ones leisure when bored...:-).

Now let's ask Tony (who was almost apologising for repainting his home office this weekend ) to make a FAQ entry of this and whatever else others contribute.

http://www.navisitestreaming.net/empeg/zImage-mk2-1.03-beta3

I just compiled a new binary version of the kernel against the v1.03-beta3 patches. This binary kernel only contains the clock overlay patch and no other third party modifications.

This should resolve the issues people were having with the RioCar versions of the player. I'm currently running this alongside the v1.03-beta3 player without any trouble. timed still needs to be cleaned so that it won't pop up as it currently does with some visualizations.

Well, we must first locate a suitable mate, and optionally bring her/him home...

who | grep -i blonde | date; cd ~;

and let's not forgive the joys of head and finger, they might even make you gasp....

And some people complain that Unix is boring

Done.

And I wasn't apologising. I was looking for sympathy. Do you have any idea how much work it is to repaint the inside of a house? We did four rooms' worth over the last week. This includes painting the ceilings, and ripping out all the carpet and applying sealer to all the floors (previous homeowner had pets, don't ask). Not to mention all the furniture moving, disassembly, prep work, re-assembly, cleanup...

I'm one tired puppy.

Done.

Thanks. Efficient as always.

Err, I am a bit ashamed to admit that, but actually no, I don't have an idea (at least not one based on personal experience) . I always let professionals do that kind of job (you know, 'I have two left hands' and that kind of excuses').

So, you certainly have my sympathy .

Cheers!

Well I never did get it running on my machine the text editor thing stopped me, I was doing pretty good (for myself) until I had to go edit (Unix) text type stuff. Yes if I can merely upload it to the right directories or follow step by step dummy instructions, I can do it, but beyond that I don't seem to have the patience like I used to. However I will read up onit, w/the realization that 1.1 will be here before I'll get clkvis on my empeg.

Here are the files needed for an editor on the empeg:

The ae binary is attached to this post, and the /etc/ae.rc file is attached to this one.

You also need the libslang library; Frank has put a lot if the libs online here, just put it in /lib/ .
Get the libslang.so.1 file (it is the same as the libslang.so.1.3.9, but ae looks for ...so.1)
or if you get the ..so.1.3.9 file, create a symlink in /lib, like this
ln -s /lib/libslang.so.1.3.9 /lib/libslang.so.1

OK, at the risk of sounding uneducated (well, I've been away for a LOONG time), has Kit mentioned releasing this for 1.3 release version?

I've had it on for a couple of weeks, and I'm adicted to it. I hate having to reach down, find my cell phone and check the time on it. (Yet another reason cell phones are dangerous in cars..)

Thanks,

The last kernel I compiled was 1.03-beta3. If I have a chance this weekend I will compile up a 1.03-final kernel for everyone.

If you want to give 1.03-beta3 a whirl until then I have a binary up at :

Thanks Kit! I've been using 1.03 beta3 for a while now with no probs. I just figured I ought to upgrade to 1.03 final.

Thanks again, and strong work!

Could you recomplie the clock hack under the 1.03 Kernel for those of us not in the know on how to complile the hack with the new system? That or very detailed instructions on how to recomplie the kernel with your hack would be very helpful. Thanks!

I did it!!! ( <--- beginner!)

I just wanted to thank both Michael and Dragi for their excellent directions on how to get this clock working. I sat here long enough to read the post saying that they needed to re-do the init file and then it worked for some reason. I tried it after about an hour and a half of thinking I did something else wrong and that was the problem. Very weird!

This board is the greatest! Any chance of getting a 24 hour display?

Thanks again everyone!

AWESOME! Talk about service! Thanks, Kit! I should've thanked you, too in my original post, since none of this would've been possible without your work in the first place.

Very nice work!

Kit,

I changed the timed file as you said and it worked fine last night. This morning, I put the player in the car and the clock display was gone. Then when I got to work, it's not there in home mode, either. I can't check anything until I get home, but does anyone have any ideas as to what happened (i.e. What I screwed up? ) I thought that was only going to happen when I upgraded the software.

Thanks!

I just checked everything out at home. The timed file is there, it's got the rwx permissions, and the init is there. For kicks, I did the cat again on the init file and viola'... the clock reappeared. I unplugged the player and left it off for a few minutes and rebooted it to see if that did anything to make the clock disappear again, but nothing changed... the clock is still there. I plugged it into the car to see if it would disappear and it was still there. Back in the house... still there.

I'm lost! I'm just going to have to wait until tomorrow morning on the drive to work and see if the clock is still there, but this is very perplexing!
