Currently, my web site is hosted on a VPS at Spry in the US. I managed to hose it a couple of days ago, and their backup/restore appears to have corrupted a lot of it (files are crosslinked). I've got a backup of my own from 3 months ago, so I'll not have lost too much.

Even so, I'm not happy.

Given the shift in the exchange rate since I first set it up, I'm thinking of moving my server back to the UK.

Can anyone recommend a good Linux hosting company in the UK? Obviously, it'll probably still have to be a VPS.

Of course, I could just move everything back to my home server...

An small EC2 instance will run you $70 a month, plus assorted bandwidth and storage fees. They've got a Europe availability zone, but not specifically UK. Very low level access, but up time is best effort, which in reality is all any other cheap hosting provider is. (EG: I don't want my $.10 for the hour back)

Mmm.. so perhaps the question might become, how much better of a home internet connection can be had for an extra 35 quid monthly? smile

EC2 netblocks are blacklisted by many things now though because of people renting an instance to spam or do other nefarious things.

In the UK your options in this area will be very limited. It is possible to have a 1Mbps up path on some ISPs and with most you will have to go to a 2Mbps SDSL to improve on that.

At the moment I have a fixed IP on O2, who use ADSL2+ in my exchange, and I get a nice 1Mbps up path with fixed IP for £12.50 a month. I host on that at the moment and while it's quicker than hosting on the 400kbps I had with Zen it's still pretty slow. I do channel bond with the free Sky Broadband I now get to get a combined down path of about 12Mbps which is nice, so maybe having a 2nd line put in with ADSL from another supplier would give you some sort of fail safe as well as freeing up the hosting circuit from heavy use.

Cheers

Cris.

Try http://ukfsn.org/

They resell Enta's services and the operator is a 'good chap' smile

I'm not sure about VPS offerings - I know he was trying to sort that out recently but apparently had a problem with the HW supplier.

I am fairly sure they offer bonding.
