Just finished an install on my '01 Audi A4. I had to build a custom fascia plate for the dash, made out of MDF then covered it in black vinyl.

Wiring was too easy. Just swapped the pins on the Rio Car cage for switched ignition and memory, and it stuck right into the factory harness for the Symphony radio. No third party harnesses (or even the extra harness Rio sends you) needed.

Sound is exquisite.

Do you want pictures of the finished install, in progress, or both? I've still got the front doors to do (hopefully by Saturday) so a few more pictures there. After that I'm sending the film off for development. Slides ... so it'll be about a week.

I'm lo-tech like that. ;-)

Finished the installation in the '01 Audi. I'm posting the most important part, the head unit (shows blue, but is now red), the remainder of the pics are at Swamp Zombie.

See Audiworld for more details on the installation.

Hey man..I have an A6 that I am trying to figure out how to mount into my Empeg into. Did you use the factory bose speakers or did you switch to aftermarket amps/speakers?

I had the bose too. I ended up replacing the front mids/tweets, and rear deck "woofers" with mids/tweets ... then I added a soundstream amp, installing it upside-down underneath the rear deck.

Really the absolute hardest part was the faceplate. If you can do that (or have it done!) then you're most of the way there. I just followed the FAQs on getting door panels and the rear deck off...

THE FAQ ON ORIGINAL STEREO REMOVAL DOESN'T WORK. If you have the huge angular factory stereo, just take it down to your Audi dealer and have them pull it loose from the dash a little ... they've got the perfect tools for it.

Can you please elaborate a little bit? I have an A6 instead of an A4. Does the A4 have speakers on the rear deck? My A6 has the rear speakers in the rear doors. Why did you put mids instead of keeping Woofers there?

Also, what did you do to accomodate the faceplate? I was thinking of getting Scosche faceplate adapters to handle two DIN sized units. What is so difficult?

Also, could you please elaborate on why the FAQ on audiworld.com is incorrect about removing the factory head unit?
Thanks a lot for your feedback!!!

I've got the 2001 A4 which has an odd and hugely shaped more-than-double-din stereo. I had to custom build a faceplate and cover it with matching vinyl. This took a good weekend of work alone. You can see it in the pictures of the original post of mine.

The '01 bose A4 has 10 speakers i believe. I have replaced the four up front in the doors, unhooked and left alone the rear doors (don't need them due to the following), and put mids and tweets in the rear deck in place of the old woofers. I don't need woofers because I put to 10' subs in the trunk. I don't need the speakers in the rear doors because I've got some perfectly good ones in the rear deck. the doors are terrible places to put speakers anyway.

what you can't get from the pictures or from this just email me. rc at swampzombie dot com.

the faq for the symphony stereo (my model) was technically correct, but didn't work for me, as the tools they recommended didn't work. I had to get the audi place to use their factory tools (woudln't sell them) to remove the deck.

if you have a newer or older model car, you probably won't even have to worry about the symphony deck.
