In light of recent events, I've just ordered a Mk2a (I'll never call it RioCar anymore...). Anyway, I've got about 8 gigs of music on my Mk1(split over 2 drives), and most of it isn't backed up (at least not in the same place), so I'd like to copy all the FIDs from the Mk1 to the Mk2. I have no problem swapping in one drive at a time and manually copying the FID directories, but my question is whether this is my only option. I know it wouldn't REALLY void the warranty on the rest of the unit to temporarily put in a second drive, but have upgraders in the past found a better way to keep the same music without opening the case the first day out of the box?
Can I use EmpegTaxi to pull back the entire FID directories with wildcards from the Mk1, or do I have to set up a script to do it? Is there a transfer size limitation in EmpegTaxi?
Thanks,
Jason

There's a util that comes with emplode called "empegclone". This only works from a lower serial number to a higher one, and only with both players on USB.

It's slow, but it will clone your old player to your new one. It was written just for this scenario.

Greetings!

I also thought this was only from a Mark I to a Mark 2. Is this true, or can you go from a Mark 2 to a Mark 2?

Fantastic! I guess I never paid much attention to the original discussions of EmpegClone. Does it handle multiple drives -> single drive well?

Yes, it has no concept of drives, just FIDs - like emplode.

You can go from mk2 to mk2, but beware that the datecode at the front of mk2 serial numbers is the wrong way round (month/year, not year/month) which may restrict your success.... it's a numeric comparison operation in empegclone.

I've cloned a 20GB player with v1.03's empegclone with no problems - it wasn't fast though.

side note... the serial number thing...

could you clarify?

if my serial is 080000446:

08 is month
00 is year
00446 is the unit number in order of production?

is that how it breaks down?

empegTaxi isn't currently a good choice for multiple file downloads.
Maybe in a later version... =)

Yup, that's it. Serial numbers are ascending, but re-started with 1 for the mk2s. mk2a's follow on directly from the mk2's, but are xx01's as they were all made in 2001 I think (don't remember seeing a 1200 for example).
