How about a button to select a group of tracks and auto number them according to the position?

What exactly do you mean auto number?
do you mean renaming the tracks ie. ## - xxxxx ?

What application did you have in mind for this?

Not the tracks. If I have a list of tracks in the window, I'd like the Track Number field to fill in automatically.

I rip and encode using EAC and Lame. I have 2500+ tracks all ripped and encoded and none of the tracks have any ID3 tags whatsoever. I didn't bother because I rip and encode to put music into the empeg, i tag everything inside explode. But it sucks having to fill in the track numberings by hand :-(. Very repetitive.

If you want to tag in the future, you can use this program which supports track #s
http://odin.mutschler.de/mp3ext/

Or you could use CDex to rip
http://www.cdex.n3.net/

CDex uses lame to encode.

Doesn't it suck to type everything else in? It's much easier to tag and then have emplode populate its database from there. Then you also get track numbers.

Hopefully what you want (a solution to inputing track numbers after all your tracks have been synced) will be possible after scripting is supported. I believe Roger mentioned this feature in another thread - have no idea when it will be available to us though. I'm actually in need of some scripting support right now as well. I'm getting by using keyboard macros, but I don't think there's any way it would be possible to solve your problem easily this way (I can only easily access text fields and there's no field that I've seen that shows "position" in a copyable format).

Typing everything else in isn't a big deal. I really like the multiple select and apply features, let's me set the title and artist and genre pretty easy. The title is taken from the track name. Oh well. Just a minor convenience thing I guess.
