Has anyone _actually_ had an empeg installed in their 5 Series BMW? I know I can get my local professional installer to do it but I'd like to have an idea of the answer before I ask the question.

Thanks

Just found it. It's an E39.

Okay it is one of the newer models which asks the questions what have you got in there just now if it is a huge in car nav system etc it could be tricky if not it should be pretty easy have never looked hard at it go over to cambridge audio they know all about empegs they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Their should be a converter kit available to let you install a standard din unit.

A top tip is for buying amps etc is unless you are 100% on what you are doing buy them from a shop you like that gives you good advice instead of mail order.

Thanks for the advice. I know Cambridge Car Audio very well. They've done a couple of installs for me before. The car has the standard head unit/computer i.e. no nav system.

I'll have a work with the guys there and see what they say.

Any luck in installing the Empeg in the E39?? Photos??

As I'm thinking of buying an E39, have done a little checking at a local installer, they
said there were mounting kits available, but one'd loose the little 'flip-door' in top of the dash.

Wondering if it can be done without to much hassle, and if the drivingcomputer will work as normal.

I'm afraid not Tommy. My Empeg has been sitting on my office desk for the past 7 months now. Cambridge Car Audio were not able to help me so I gave up on getting it installed. If you have any information on who might be able to do an install without breaking the business computer (or indeed any other vital bits of the car), let me know.

Ta.

I've finally got the Empeg most of the way installed into my 2001 330i, so I am confident it can be done in you 1998 535i. I don't know if this is a Scosche dash kit, but there's probably one out there in addition to this one. The Empeg sounds pretty good but I would recommend picking up some high quality line drivers to bump up the volume as it's a little faint. If you find some good ones, let me know because I am still looking.

I've looked around on the different dashboards, it looks like the 3 series has more
free space than the 5series, but it would be nice to see some pictures of your install.

I'd show you pics of my install except for two problems:

1. I haven't taken any.
2. It's not yet complete.

A buddy from the office is doing most of the work for me and he's only available when he's around and has time. The Empeg is still dangling, parts are not correctly in place, and sound quality needs to be improved with some preamps that he's building. Again, if anyone knows of some good preamp line drivers, I'd like to hear about it.

When all is said and done, I will post some pics along with the details of how this all went down. Till then, good luck with the 5 series. My father has one but I'm pretty sure he's not interested in an Empeg, so I didn't bother offering him one.
