So, I finally got around to installing Hijack last night...all I can say is Wow! Mark has really done a phenomenal job with this. I was up until 2:30 last night goofing with it.

One of the things I really like is the IR Translation. This, along with the Button Codes Display allowed me to figure out that an old Kenwood CD Player remote I had would work as an Empeg remote. So, I worked in Photoshop to design a new button layout that could overlay on top of the remote. I came up with the attached.

I then went down to Kinko's and got the layout printed out on some glossy white card stock. Attached is a picture of the actual remote with the overlay.

My only disappointment is that the physical result didn't turn out as well as the Photoshop file. Stupid Kinkos. But, it's good enough for now.

that is really cool. i would be interested in doing that. You could make really neat lookin' remotes, with different skins and stuff. How did you get the printout to stick to the remote?

Right now, I just have it stuck on with some tape, applied to the back of the remote. It's holding pretty well, actually.

The card stock paper is pretty sturdy too, which is nice. I think when I have some time I'll try to print out a better copy. When I was at Kinko's, I printed out the design on a Tektronix color laser printer. It actually looked pretty good. They then took that and made a color copy onto the stock paper. This is where there was some degradation in quality.

The other thing I need to work on is the cutting out of the buttons. I basically did this via a box cutter. Did a pretty good job, I must admit. Wish there was a way to make it more precise.

For anybody interested, the remote model number is RC-R0503. It's for a Kenwood Carousel CD Changer. I actually had two Kenwood remotes I wasn't using. This one had a slightly better button layout, though.

I did this a while ago with my Mark I remote since it had all the original Kenwood labels on it.

It needs a redo now.

Use an X-Acto knife. And better stock that wont fray. Getting it printed onto plastic would be best. It would also be nice to have an appropriately sized punch, but that's a long shot. Making one might also be a long shot (for most people anyway).

Would photo paper be better than card stock? Most photo shops will print from image to photo paper.

Plastic base photo "paper" should be better than paper based paper...

What you really need is to find someone who has one of these:

http://www.rolanddga.com/products/printcut/colorcamm/pc-12/default.asp

It's basically a one-off sticker maker, complete with precision cutting.

Maybe http://www.mindspring.com/~agi/ColorCamm.htm?

I can't speak for the people I just mentioned; they just showed up in a Google search, but I've seen the Roland device in action, and it's really nice.

Wow, thanks for the ideas. I think I might be doing some running around today to see if anybody has something like that.
