On another computer,

It has two OS's installed, 98 and XP. I was on 98 and installed McAfee. Now when it restarts, and i choose to go to 98, it does this virus check where it says, Pass1 Pass2 etc. etc. etc., and it stops on Pass14 and doesn't go any further, HOWEVER, XP will load. How the hell do i fix this?
If i just delete the McAfee folder in XP, will it stop the virus checking? Or i guess, how do i uninstall a program thats on another OS?

i know this isn't a tech support forum, but i'm not gettin' any luck today.

Go all the way into Windows 98 when it gives you the multi-boot choice. While inside Windows 98, de-install the McAfee software.

Then go into Windows XP and install the XP-compatible version of McAfee.

thats the thing though, it won't load Windows 98. It stops on Pass14 and just does nothing. My problem is not being able to get to Windows 98.

Try pressing ctrl+C or ctrl+break before it locks up.

If you've got the WIN98 bootup menu activated (with a timeout larger than 0 seconds if you use TweakUI), then you can select safe mode from that boot menu. Note that this is the menu after you've already selected wich OS to load. It's the same boot menu that lets you boot into "Command Prompt Only", etc.
If you don't have that menu, then holding down <CTRL> during the WIN98 boot sequence should bring up the boot menu.
Good Luck.

I didn't know about holding down CTRL. I always just pressed F8 when it said "starting Windows 98".

Yeah. I couldn't remember if F8 was step-by-step load, or if it was "boot Previous OS". I just found that CTRL trick on google, and I haven't tested it.

I believe F5 automatically selects the safe mode, without having to choose it from the menu.

Most of my Dells, it's F2 during boot.

Depends on the BIOS more than the manufacturer.

I remember computers (usually in the 286-386 days) where you had to run a program from within MS- (or PC- or DR- or whatever-) DOS in order to get to the BIOS. Good luck if you were running something else....

But these days, usually Del on direct-to-market motherboards and F2 on Dell, Gateway, etc., but YMMV.

I've seen F2, Delete and F8 used as the key to press during boot.

As well as F10 for most Compaq's (some use F12). Better yet, just mash the keyboard, you're bound to hit a key that'll get you in

If nothing else, it'll cause a "Keyboard error, press space to continue, or press F-something to enter the BIOS". Often, that's quite a useful way to figure it out.

Old Phoenix BIOS used Ctrl+Alt+S, IIRC.

from supporting 4000 pc's, I must say the 'mash the keyboard' method is foolproof (and good stress relief)
