i've ripped a CD and want to split it so there aren't any gaps in playback. the problem is that i cannot see ANY files within the gapkiller 'open file' window/menu.

i'm running win XP pro, is this program incompatability problem? i tried to goto the web address within the 'about' window but i get re-directed to some search site.

please advise.

I never tested it under XP, it was written before XP even came out. Do you have a Win98 box to try it on?

Also there are other programs which can do the task you're looking for.

i don't have any win98 OS running, just XP. so which apps would you reccomend to split it up without gaps? i prefer not reverting it back to .wav because after i re-encode it it will lose quality. the only apps i know of to split large files require doing this...

I remember one other was suggested elsewhere on this BBS, I don't remember its name.

You can check mine out, http://www.heathcosoft.com/products/mp3trackmaker

It does quite a bit more than just splitting (it supports CUE files, etc and can do track joining) but unfortunately it is $13. The demo allows you to make a maximum of three splits, but if you just keep doing that over and over again, you can get around registering it

MP3 Tag Studio has some sort of trim function. I've never used it for that, but it's there.

It's only for trimming the beginning and end off of a given single file. What he's looking for is a utility that splits one large MP3 into a bunch of smaller MP3s, all in one go, by entering time index numbers.

Has anyone else tried:

http://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/#mp3dc

I have used it for grabbing a section from the middle of a long MP2 file, but I don't know if it is useful for spliting files. It also has a difficult to understand UI.

i tried mp3trackmaker as linked above and it works good except the way you have to input the times is confusing. you can't input individual track times so you have to calculate the times which i don't really see the reason to make things more difficult. i think it'll work better than most splitters i've seen regardless.

on the other hand, mp3DirectCut looks like its hokey and confusing.

jets,

Reason I didn't allow to enter track times rather than offsets is because a vast majority of people use offsets. I guess I could have allowed for both, though.

well, it just gets difficult calculating since counting minutes means stopping at 60 rather than 100. gets confusing really easy!

live comedy CDs i download...i know the length of each track but then i have to 'add' the times together to figure out what number to plug in. any chance of seeing that in the next version??? because if it did that i'd fork over the money but until that time i'll have to suffer.

I swear by this: Direct Cut, but you have to take it a step at a time: It does a lot of things but, as has been said it is hard to understand. It will do what is being asked in this thread.

I got the settings wrong recording a radio programme from my soundcard and, re-setting the gain level on this package got the volume down to match my MP3's, amazingly it also seemed to remove the distortion

Yeah, I used it to extract a 7Mb MP2 file encoded at 128k JS from the middle of a 140Mb MP2 file encoded at 80k mono (my DAB digital radio can switch encodings in the middle of a stream, which many decoders cannot cope with).

I should have checked before posting, but it doesn't mention XP, just 9* & NT - Sorry, maybe it won't help after all.

im using directcut 1.22, works flawlessly on XP (tried it on my clone at home, and an HP computer here at work, both running XP) - the buttons look cryptic at first but if you muck about with them you will suddenly click to what they mean, and then the symbols make perfect sense.

for a beginner just wanting to chop a segment out of a large mp3 (ive done it on 300+mb file sizes without problem) dont worry about any of the buttons. other than play and stop. scroll to the beginning of the segment you want to cut... leftclick on the level display to set start position, scroll to the end of the segment, right click to set end position, then just go file->save selection. give it a filename. done
