i was thinking of buying a 60gb to 80gb harddrive for my mark 2. r there any suggestions for a place to get the cheapest reliable one.

whoops my bad. im from northern california. ive heard pricewatch.com has cheap hard drives from time to time but i have not seen any in the past few weeks.

My suggestion is... don't worry about it. The difference between a really cheap price and an easily available price is probably $20 -- $30. It just isn't worth your time to spend hours searching the internet, then waiting for days in great hope that "ElectricInternetBargainsGalore.Net" really has it in stock and isn't going to send you two 40 GB drives instead of one 80 GB drive.

Go to a reputable supplier, pay their price, and be done with it. A year from now you'll never miss that extra $30 you spent to get top quality service.

I have been using Googlegear for my 80GB drive purchases. At the time of this post, it is $256 plus free 2nd day shipping.

One interesting note, apparently Toshiba has come out with an 80GB drive of their own. $242 plus free 2nd day shipping.

I personally have been extremely happy with the IBM / Hitachi Travelstar line. Has anyone tried the Toshiba 80GB, or can report on any stories comparing drive manufacturers?

Down to $202 right now... The free 2nd day shipping makes this a great deal. I almost ordered the Toshiba 80gb model from another store for about the same price, but they're back ordered until the 18th.

Nope. I think the 5K80 is 5400 RPM (vice 80GN's 4200 RPM). On the empeg, a 5400 RPM or faster drive won't help you out at all, and will just create more heat and noise.

Incidentally, Googlegear has changed their name to ZipZoomFly due to a lawsuit from Google. The lawsuit makes Googlegear look pretty stupid, and if you look at the "About Us" page on ZipZoomFly, they're pretty much lying about why they changed the name. But as long as I get my drive in good condition I'll be happy. They've always had good reseller ratings.

Not really. The 5K80 runs at 5400 rpm, and the 80GN at 4200 rpm. The empeg won't notice the difference. Get the cheaper one.
