Ok.. after chatting with OctobrX (Trea) on irc today, and mocking him about his empeg review, he asked me to write up another review, and he would make sure it was posted to linux.com. He wanted everyone to know that it was just his opinion, and not to be taken as anything more. He also wanted to say that linux.com is willing to accept articles of differing opinion. to quote:

[OctobrX] see
[OctobrX] that's what I want people to understand.
[OctobrX] that linux.com is a place where THIER voice can be heard.
[OctobrX] so don't think you can't write about other things too.

What I want is to write something with a little bit of open source involved, I want to take snipits from the BBS to form my article, I want to have the good, the bad, and the things people overlook when thinking about the empeg, mp3's, and the like. I'll be working on this over the next week or so, and will probably post it next friday. pic's of empeg's installed are welcome, URL's are needed, and anything cool you could think of to fit in the article.

if this is what you're looking for...

one of the things that i love the most about the empeg is not just that it holds all my music, but more importantly, i can find any song in about 5 soconds or even less. to do this, all i need to know is the name of the song i want. i don't have to remember the song PIN number or anything like that. anyone can load a bunch of music in their car, but what good is it if you can't hear what you want to listen to. this is, imho, what seperates the empeg from everything else.

Greetings!

You can use mine also - it is at this web site. I agree with Jeremy. The fact that the empeg holds all of the music I want in a format that is instantly accessible and searchable is great! That is what brought me to empeg to start with. And, because it is open source, all kinds of neat tools (i.e., volume adjusting kernel, IR hacks, displayserver, tetris, etc.) can be developed to really customize each unit.
