I'd like to use the drive from my new, backup empeg as a second drive in my original empeg. Is my understanding correct that I don't need to do anything to this drive since it's already been formatted for the empeg?

Right. Might want to make sure that its running the same version software, but I guess it doesnt really matter unless the first drive fails. Just plug it in and the new space will show up in emplode.

Just to clarify that if you do this with a disk that's already got some music on, you'll have to go to some trouble to ensure that the FID files are uniquely named.

Since you're moving a blank disk, that'll work fine.

What might be better is move your old drive to the new drive as then it will be in warranty for a year instead of sitting on a shelve with the warranty running also you get the benefits of the mk2a over the mk2.

Actually, my new unit has the faulty cable that sporadically will cause the hard drive to not be found. So I have been given permission to open it up. Though I've probably ruined any chance at further warranty support with this thread.

I don't think so. If I ware you I would install 1.03 dev on both players, open them, see what's wrong with the cable on the new one, and, it that is fixed, add disk drive from the old empeg to the new one. In these circumstances I am sure guys@empeg would honor waranty if problem develops with, say, display (other than knocking off evacuation nipple during disk installation ).
