My new player arrived this morning and I've upgraded it to 2.0b7 to match my other player. I've attached both to USB and attempted to clone my old one to my new one but it's only recognising one player - sort of. I've attached a screenshot showing the clone tool so you can see what I mean. The player shown as the destination is correct but the source player is clearly not. I don't think it's anything wrong with the player because if I fiddle about unplugging & plugging back in again I can get the old player correctly recognised but only as the destination. I'm running Win '98 SE, 2.0b7 and mlord's kernel on my old player (but not on the new). Anyone got any ideas or am I just being a bit dim somewhere? I've looked through the FAQ and done a search for "clone" but couldn't find anything.

Same problem has happened to a few people, including myself. Solution is to back down to 1.03, but the serial numbers could pose a problem there. Another solutuon is to use an alpha version of JEmplode with cloning support, or wait for empeg to release a new clone tool with the serial number problem fixed.

Personally, I am FTPing the data between the two units, and also cloning the scratch partition to save the plays data.

Thanks Drakino. I think I'll downgrade to 1.03, clone then upgrade again. I'll let you know if this is successful.

OK, tried this but it got the players the wrong way round, old one as destination and new one as source. I've since found another thread about this outlining the same problem. I've tried JEmplode too but it completely fails to find either of the players. Oh well, looks like I'll have to wait until the guys@empeg correct it in (hopefully) the next release.

JEmplode only works with Serial and Ethernet (USB is not currently supported). Have you tried it only with USB?

No, I tried it with Ethernet. I checked the "Options..." settings and noticed it could only use Serial or Ethernet. I did have it set on Ethernet Broadcast though so just now I tried with a specific address and it found my player. It sat for 1 or 2 minutes retrieving tags then it said it was checking the player media and the Empeg screen showed "Synchronising" which I thought was a bit odd. Anyway I left it for a while and it then said it failed to check the player media and it started to retrieve the tags again. It did this for a while and then all I got was an unattached items branch off of the player root. No tunes or anything else. BTW this is with my old player with 2500 tunes on it.

And is this a 2.0 or 1.0 Empeg?

This is a Mk2 running 2.0b7.

edit: I'm gonna try downgrading to 1.03 again and retry JEmplode.

Don't bother -- it doesn't support 1.0 anymore. Usually the synchronizing occurs when it detects that you have files that are missing some metadata, and it will try to download them from the empeg to update that data... Unfortunately, this "feature" is kind of flaky sometimes. I suspect that's what you're seeing. I can't explain why it doesn't end up finding _anything_. I'll look into it ...

Thanks
Mike

OK, tried this before reading your post: Just downgraded my new player to 1.03 as there's less to screw up should anything go wrong. Tried with JEmplode again and it found everything OK but I can't find any options for cloning my player though. I think I'll leave it until the Empeg guys have sorted out their clone tool or if I get impatient I might swap the drives over and clone that way.

In retrospect, this doesn't sound like the tag rebuilding code ... If you have a few moments and feel like running this again, can you run

java -Ddebug=true -jar jemplode20.jar > debug.txt

in your jemplode directory (i'm assuming this jemplode20.jar is a recent one from batmanthehorse.com?). That will produce a ton of debug output ... can you get the errors to occur then mail me debug.txt -- [email protected].

If you don't have time, it's cool ... But I'd like to figure out why your problem is occurring.

Thanks a lot
Mike

I was suspicious that I was using the wrong version of JEmplode as I knew there had been an upgrade for version 2 of the player software. The version I've been trying is 1.0b1 which looks as though it's an early Beta. I got it by following the link on riocar.org (takes you here. If this link is wrong maybe it needs updating. I haven't got much time at the moment (off to the GF's soon). I'll try the link you suggest and if I still have problems I'll run that debug thingy and send you the output. Thanks for your help.

OK, I downloaded JEmplode 2 and although it got further I didn't complete a cloning operation. It came up with some errors and then had a problem restarting the new player. I'll run it again tomorrow and make a note of the errors. I notice from another thread that you've done some work on the Ethernet broadcast code. I'll download the latest before I try again. Incidentally I did have some problems at first with Ethernet broadcast but then it just worked .
