I have read the FAQ and done several searches and I still can't get my unit to connect via usb or e-net. I am using WinXP Pro. The only way I can connect is with the serial cable and it is incredibly slow. Please help. I cannnot figure out how to set up the e-net, I have a hub with a cable modem, when I plug the player into it, where/how do I change/setup the settings? I am sooo confused. I got the install done last night, and would like to use my unit.

Did you happen to see the configure player option in emplode when you connected with a serial cable? If you can find it, it has several options for configuring your player, including -Neworking - which has options for choosing an ip address for your empeg. Pick a ip that is within your existing networks ip range or choose dhcp if you are using that. Then hit the sync button and you should be all set.

To get ethernet working... connect to the empeg with emplode via your serial cable. the under the File menu, select Configure Player. Select the networking tab. If you just have a hub and an internal network behind your cable modem, you'll probably want to click Manual Configuration, and assign a non publicly addressed IP... something like 192.168.1.* (* being any number below 254 i believe?). netmask could be 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway would be your modem ip address. Then sync, and see if you can connect with ethernet then. =]

Between 1 and 254, inclusive, assuming your netmask is 255.255.255.0.

I was suprised to find out that its not. I pulled out the new manual and looked at it as I was typing a message to tell him to RTFM. I'll make sure it gets in the next revision. (If I ever finish it)

First, see this thread

Next, you didn't provide many details about your problem. What software are you running? Player software version as well as emplode...

You might want to launch emplode FIRST with serial. Then make sure the player config is set to use DHCP for ethernet.

When you launch emplode, you will be able to change the way it searches for your player. In 2.0betas the button is labled OPTIONS. Press that and turn off all options except Network Broadcast (ethernet). Now wait a little while for it to search.

What port speed is your computer set to? As a test, if it is at 100Mbit/s, try changing the NIC properties to force it to 10Mbit/s. Now try emplode again.

Check the ABOUT menu on the empeg for your ethernet address - just to make sure it has had one assigned. (You can also connect up through a terminal (like hyperterminal) to watch the serial port as you power the empeg on. This will show you what's going on during IP assignment, etc.

You can also try changing your player to a FIXED IP address.

Also, when you said you had a HUB connected with cable modem, did you in fact mean a standard hub or do you have one of those linksys (or similar) routers? If you're using something other than a regular hub or switch, then you can probably manage the specific port on that device through a web browser (read you instruction manual). You might have to set the port up to map an IP to the empeg, or allow DHCP, etc..

The bottom line is... If you want more specific help, you should probably supply more specific information on your current setup.

You might also want to use the SEARCH feature of the BBS - there's a lot of archived information here that might be useful to you.

There are connection issues with emplode's USB driver under Winodws XP. For some it works, others not.

Win XP supports UPnP - if you are running 2.0beta firmware on the player, you should be able to just connect the player with Ethernet and it should just work. No guarantees though.

Also, try disconnecting your cable modem from the hub - it might be causing DHCP problems.

The about option on the player will give you the current network settings.

emplode 1.0x has a section on setting up Ethernet connections in the online help.

I had a similar problem with my Windows XP Pro setup but it turned out to be because the unit was plugged into the same USB device as my ADSL Modem. If you want to use USB then make sure that the unit is plugged in to a USB device on its own just in case it's a power drain problem. I used the USB connection to program my unit with Emplode to have a fixed IP (I used 10.1.1.69 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0). Then you should be able to easily connect the unit to a switching 10/100 hub like I did or a 10base-T one will do as well. A dedicated 100-baseT hub will NOT work as the NIC in the unit is 10Base-T.

Finally, don't do what I did and fear the worst. It'll be a simple problem whatever it is and with the help of this forum you'll solve it soon enough, I'm sure!

Thanks guys!! I finally got it working via e-net, I couldn't figure out how to set the ip address, but the directions left made it alot easier. Also I hadn't set it to DHCP. Thanks, for the help.

David, any idea if The Guys are any closer to resolving these issues yet?

Not much progress as far as I know. We are unable to re-create the problem on our test setups.

We need more reports from users with the problem; unfortunately as soon as I mention that Ethernet works fine in XP, most go quiet and I don't hear back.

In that case, I'llhave to start poking my friends to use it as I know they both had problems under clean installs of XP with USB. I'll also have to try it sometime as well to see if I encounter any problems.

USB definitely doesn't work under a fairly clean XP Pro for my brother. I don't know if I've seen anyone mention on the BBS that they were having any success with this.

Just upgraded to 2.0-b11, and the problem's still there with WinXP. On first try, it would find the Empeg, but as soon as I clicked on it, it would complain that "the device is no longer connected".

I made it behave the same way I made it behaving with b7 -- opening Options and enabling "network broadcast" and "specific network address" as well.
Eventually, it'll start doing the above again. Disabling the network options tends to fix this, as does enabling serial.

In fact, it seems that whenever USB is being problematic, enabling disabled connectivity options, or disabling enabled ones seems to give Emplode the kick in the butt it needs to work for a span.
