I'm about to bring the virgin backup Empeg into action. Without opening either Empeg, is there a way to transfer my music and/or playlists over?

Assuming that the answer will be "no way", is there anything that will at least make the process somewhat easier?

There is a shortcut in the Emplode install folder called "Rio Car clone wizard".
Whether or not it does want you want, I don't know. But it sure sounds promising.

Yup, do a search, it's not hard to do if you're proficent with linux, and not impossible to do if you're not.

http://www.differentpla.net/~roger/empeg/car/cloning.html will tell you everything you need to know and walk you through it step by step. I just finished bringing my backup into service yesterday, and this method worked perfectly. If you can, try and have two computers or serial ports so that you can look at the output of both of them at once, it'll make your life easier.

It can also be handled by netcat or rsync if players are connected via ethernet...
