I put up some of the Empeg-related stuff behind FTP at guildhouse.net (ftp://guildhouse.net/pub/empeg/). This is just an unofficial archive that I'm keeping up for myself.

You might not get through to it if you have some firewalls on the way, ie. might want to try real FTP-programs (maybe also passive-mode connection straight to guildhouse.net).

I'm not promising any longevity for this, nor frequent updates. But just something in case all other links fail. As everyone else, I suggest using the official Empeg-site and also riocar.org for the latest versions. I'm only keeping Mark II stuff over there.

Any addenums & flames, just mail me.

Amarth

would you mind setting up an rsyncd server so i can mirror that?

maybe we should make an official ftp.riocar.org mirror list, and rsync them from somewhere.

Haven't tried. However the problem is that the machine is behind a firewall (although the network itself is blazing fast)... Only ports 20 and 21 open for the ftp-connections.

well.. i don't know what kind of firewall you have, but it shouldn't be too dificult to send rsync through if ftp can get through. rsync is on port 873.

it could be configured to any other port, as long as we agree on it.

Assuming that the sysadmin wants to punch another hole in the firewall...

I'll set one up if there is the demand for it.

As of current, I've got a fair amount of bandwidth that is sitting unused... so it wouldn't be a problem.

My question (as I pull some of this down from guildhouse.net) is that this included the player files and everything.

Does EMPEG have a problem with us doing this as long as the files stay intact?

I'll send a mail to rob to be sure.

SuperQ, I'll put an rsyncd up for it after I get it online....

Anything else we want here?

Hmm. After hearing back from Empeg, 90% of the stuff in the ftp site is not going to be allowed to be distributed.

For any number of reasons (foremost probably being the need to ensure that people received verified KNOWN good copies of the software.. But that's my guess only) empeg does not want the files being distributed from any other mirror.

Third party certainly could (pending author's permission), so it might possibly still be worth it.

Even though I know some people don't appreciate it (and it's probably even forbidden to..), but I'm still running that ftp-site for Empeg (mostly mk2) related software.

What I do is just sometimes check for new apps (and new versions) that are available for the Empeg and then put them there. In a way, the ftpd is up there mostly for my personal use, but some people have found it useful.

Just FYI..

Could you put where you got each file from though? At the moment it's not clear where you would go for updates.

Good idea, about the sources. I will do this ASAP.

The ftp-site (ftp://guildhouse.net/pub/empeg/) is still alive and kicking, as you can see.. While the service is very VERY unofficial (still!), it is rather fast bandwith -wise. I updated to 2.0b13 today and found empeg.com's links really slow for some reason, then remembered that I actually had those files stored already...saved me a good 15 minutes.

The empeg guys were previously very opposed to anyone else distributing their software.

Please see my message in this thread posted 27/05/02 12:59 PM .. I know my honest intentions will earn me _at least_ the defacement of my little personal empeg-stash, public ridicule on the community board, bodily harm on a dark alley, flattening of my car's tires and a dismissal from my job ..but I'm still causing general ire with my misbehaviour

I trust the Empeg people would have already contacted me through this board during the past year if my actions would have caused any trouble..

For security reasons, I monitor my files rather frequently (automatically, actually) to find out of any suspicious action etc. Perhaps I need to add more information about the unofficiality of the files available there, so there will be no 'misunderstandings'.

I hadn't noticed your site before.

Nobody has yet convinced me that there is a need for a software repository anywhere other than www.empeg.com. I have refused others who have wanted to maintain a mirror, and the reasoning can be found elsewhere in the archives of the BBS. It isn't just arbitrary.

I don't think there's anything dishonest about your archive, but I would request for our proprietry stuff to be removed.

Thanks

Rob

I'll do some reorganization on the site ASAP. I can think of reasons, but I see little point to argue about it. I'll go through the files and move the appropriate things away.
