I use my empeg to DJ parties, comedy shows and other events. Sometimes I'll hook it up to my home system and sit across the room to control it via a network connection. All I do is queue up music via emplode and its insert, append and play buttons. Having so many tracks, emplode's search feature is great (esp. for improv comedy shows when I'll have to find a song and play it within seconds). But if I'm not directly connected to the player, I usually end up walking across the room to skip a track that has run its course or pull up the Now & Next screen to get an idea of the order of the songs coming up (since append is kinda iffy sometimes).

Since I use the empeg's RCA outputs and don't stream from the player, can anyone think of some meathod or software tools that would make this work at least "better"?

With the empeg itself I can't really think of anything aside from having a playlist set up before-hand - which is always tough when you are trying to play music to suit the crowd.

Winamp, and several other mp3 players all support cross-fading and other DJ useful features, but those would all require a computer rather than the empeg.

What a lot of people do with iPods and such is to get two of them and hook them up to a fader. Then, you can use one for playing to the live audience and the other for cueing up and listening to whatever's next. If you've got two empeg's, you could use them this way.

One cool solution is to have a PC with two soundcards. One feeds the PA and the other feeds your headphones. You can tweak Winamp to have two instances, one per sound card, or you can buy various "professional" DJ software.

So, with just an empeg and a notebook, emplode is the best way to go?

I was wondering if there was some way to get the "Now and Next" info to my notebook (maybe by a screen emulator?) and/or have a Next / Previous track control.

Sometimes I will download a track to the desktop and play it through Winamp to my headphones if I want to preview a track. Because I'm getting requests all the time, I can't make a playlist before hand.

If you want to view "now & next" data you could use charcoalgray99's web interface which uses vnc (I think) to grab the empeg screen. Though I doubt whether this would work simultaneously with emplode (so you would lose the ability to perform searches, which is probably unacceptable). Alternatively you could try & "home brew" the vnc thingy alone, again whether this is possible with emplode running??

Personally if emplode supported viewing of "now & next", I for one would be a very happy bunny.

Cheers, Sim

BPM Studio is absolutely brilliant, you can even get a hardware panel to control like a CD player!

WOOHOO!!! (or w00t if you prefer)

I just got a gig to DJ at one of the area's hottest bars! Two things sold them on the idea: 1) That last week someone complained to the manager that the DJ was sending horrible levels out of the board. My buddy who used to bounce there heard about it, found me in the bar and asked me to fix it (everything was WAY over driven and the EQ was screwy) and 2) the owner of the bar heard that I used to run sound at comedy shows and showed up to the gig's with over 18,000 songs and sound effects in my backpack .

I figure that after I sell my 48GB drive and work 5 or so nights I'll be able to buy an 80GB drive then I can work on paying off a docking station.

Now... if I can bribe the empeg guys to get me a version of the software with crossfading as a beta tester... hmmm... [evil grin]

Thank God I wasn't drinking coffee just now - that stuff kills keyboards.

In addition to the VNC option, JEmplode has a screen-grab feature with continuous update. Doesn't look like it can help with the Next/Prev problem, though if you ask the right people really nicely...

I was just thinking of Jemplode or Tony's LogoEditor w. the screen grab feature. And it looks like EmpegTray now works over http!! So I think I'll give this setup a try and let you guys know how it works.

Now that is "damning with faint praise".
